Let’s dive right into another 3-Count Spotlight as we look at third-generation wrestler Davey Boy Smith Jr.
Mic Check
On the microphone, Davey Boy Smith Jr is far from awful but very short of good. He can deliver a serviceable promo to hype a match but there comes a time—especially with wrestling in the West—where a wrestler has to hold their own in a lengthier segment against another.
Then again, DBS Jr has never really been in a position where his mic skills had to be better than solid. His wrestling always did the talking for him but wrestlers at the top need to be able to deliver on the mic since they’re getting more screen time.
A promotion that appreciates managers would be fine for this guy as he could easily be paired up with one.
He’s Got the Walk, He’s Got the Look
There’s not much to say here: look at him. He looks just like his father, The British Bulldog, and is even taller. He’s a hoss! This is an impressive ass wrestler!
With some facial hair or even just stubble and you’ve got a towering, muscular heel on your hands. If you just need a big, brawny babyface then catch him as is. He’ll work either but comes off as babyface at first glance.
All of that considered: Davey Boy Smith Jr has the look.
The Ringcraft of Davey Boy Smith Jr
As big as he is at 6’5 and 250lbs to 260lbs, Smith already comes off as a powerful wrestler. However, he is also surprisingly agile and a monster when it comes to technical wrestling.
He received a lot of training with his family and in Japan as his career went on. Mixing all of this together and it would be very easy to bill DBS Jr as either a sadistic wrestling machine or clean, pure wrestler. His work in Major League Wrestling and New Japan Pro-Wrestling is evidence of this.
Smith can also throw hands in stiffer, physical strike wars but his bread and butter rest with suplexes and submissions.
Potential: Extremely High
DBS Jr has two out of three of the tools that pop “main eventer” and there have been wrestlers who were pushed with one of those tools. In the right company, he could easily be a major star with the proper hype and promotion behind him.
Hell, he could come in hot as a surprise signing or with a lot of hoopla behind him. I believe the latter of the two would be the best option since he was last in Major League Wrestling before it got the Vice deal.
I’m rating his potential as “extremely high”. He’s currently 35 but there’s still plenty of time for the second wave of Davey Boy Mania. It’s actually surprising AEW or Ring of Honor hasn’t scooped him up yet.
