Colby Covington may just be the least liked man in combat sports. His profile considerably increased once he took up podcast-based trash talk and a Trump-loving persona, and it’s not something Kamaru Usman’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, is impressed by.
With a fight lined up between Usman, reigning welterweight champion, and Colby Covington, the number one contender, Abdelaziz only sees the championship bout going one way. Abdelaziz told MMA Junkie:
Abdelaziz on “racist scumbag” Covington: “he’s a dead man walking!”
“Last time they fought, he broke his jaw. This fight, I hope he becomes blind or something bad happens to him because he’s a very bad guy. He’s on the same piece of shit level as Conor. They’re head to head.
He’s a racist scumbag. I think he plays the race card, but I think he really is. He insults people’s religion, wife.
You see him talking about Dustin – he said Dustin Poirier’s wife is a prop. How are you gonna say that? This is a guy he used to train with, sweat with, eat with. How are you gonna talk about him like that?”
Colby’s press attacks are nothing new, and have come under fire from various corners of the MMA world. He’s widely criticized for sitting on the sidelines poking at active fighters while avoiding the octagon himself.
Colby lost to Usman in the latter’s first title defense way back in 2019, and since defeated Tyron Woodley. In that first fight, Colby was ahead of Usman on points until Kamaru knocked him out towards the end of the bout.
Usman, on the other hand, has remained active, consistently improving his already formidable fight game. Abdelaziz continued:
“Colby Covington is a dead man. He’s a dead man walking, the clock is ticking, and he’s gonna get what he asked for very violently.
Kamaru Usman is not the same fighter. We’ve seen him improve every fight, and that’s it” Abdelaziz went on to express his wish for Covington to face serious injury, perhaps even paralysis:
“I think Dana White is right: This is the fight. He’s the promoter and at the end of the day, you want Colby Covington drinking out of a straw or not walking for a year or two years because he’s a decent fighter.
He’s not a great fighter. He’s gonna be there hanging out, but I believe Usman will hurt him really, really badly.”
There is no date or location yet set for the welterweight title fight, but when it happens it’s sure to be one of the biggest events of the year.
