Today’s NJPW Summer Struggle show was a more action packed affair than usual. With a title defense in the main event, two young lions finally being sent on their way, and Chase Owens proving to be a dangerous threat, we have a fair bit to recap.
Yota Tsuji & Yuya Uemura Graduate From Young Lion Status, Have Final Matches Before Excursions
The first two matches on the card featured Yuya Uemura & Yota Tsuji finally getting the matches they’ve been waiting for. Uemura took on Kazuchika Okada, while Tsuji got the match with Tetsuya Naito he was clamouring for. This was also set to be their last matches infront of the familiar fans of Japan,. It was their sendoff matches.
As should be obvious with their main event competition, both men lost, with Uemura losing to the Money Clip and Tsuji to the Liontamer. After the matches, their opponents both gave an extra message. Okada nailed a dropkick on Uemura to send him packing, while Naito simply gave Tsuji a simple “Adios”. It’s unclear where these two will go for their excursions, but hopefully we will know soon.
Chase Owens Torments Toru Yano
Despite the King of Pro Wrestling trophy being a creation of Kazuchika Okada, it’s become most important to Toru Yano. He held it all through 2020, and was hoping to do the same in 2021 before losing to Chase Owens. The trophy was won in the NJPW Rumble before Wrestle Grand Slam, where Yano defended against most of the roster.
Following a six man tag team with over SHO, YOH & Yano alongside the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Champions, Taiji Ishimori & El Phantasmo, Owens would lure Yano into the ring for a three on one attack. He would force Yano to say “I Quit” or the trophy would be smashed, and Yano complied. This likely sets the stipulation of their coming match.
CHAOS Are Untouchable As NEVER Openweight Six Man Champions
The main event of this show saw Tomohiro Ishii, Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI defend the NEVER Openweight Six Man Championships against the Suzuki-Gun unit of Taichi, Zack Sabre Jr. & Minoru Suzuki. It was another hard hitting title defense, but in the end Goto & YOSHI-HASHI would nail their finisher on Suzuki for the win.
This comes after Ishii demanded that if Suzuki-Gun loses, they rebrand as Taichi-Gun. It’s unclear if this will happen. However Suzuki taking the fall in the end is not a good look for the leader of this faction. BUSHI, Tetsuya Naito and SANADA were quick to step up to challenge next, giving us what could be the ninth defense for CHAOS.
Can anyone stop this dominant CHAOS trio? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
