Conor McGregor appears to have finally graduated from his Tweet-and-delete sprees to bizarre displays of public aggression. Appearing at the MTV VMAs, resting on a cane, it wasn’t long before McGregor took out his ire on none other than rapper-turned-rocker Machine Gun Kelly.
Without a UFC bout – or even a novelty boxing match – in his immediate future, McGregor stole headlines from the MTV VMAs when he threw a drink at Machine Gun Kelly. Reports of why exactly McGregor did so are unclear, although some have claimed that he was denied a photo with Kelly.

McGregor, when questioned about the incident, denied the entire thing. “Nothing happened with me, I only fight real fighters. People that actually fight. I certainly don’t fight little Vanilla Ice white rappers. I don’t even know the guy. I don’t know anything about him, except that he’s with Megan Fox.”
Kelly, when asked about the incident, declined to comment. Jorge Masvidal Tweeted to suggest that upstart fight streaming service Triller, most notable for promoting the Jake Paul vs Ben Askren bout, organized the altercation.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility, particularly considering McGregor’s fading fortunes in the UFC. He’s only won a single fight since defeating Eddie Alvarez in 2016.
Although at his peak Conor McGregor was one of the UFC’s most exciting stars, in recent years his inactivity in the Octagon and successive clashes with the law have tainted his legacy. McGregor was the first fighter to hold simultaneous titles, knocking out both Jose Aldo and Eddie Alvarez to claim the featherweight and lightweight divisions.
However, he failed to defend either and was eventually stripped of both belts. A moneymaking fight against Floyd Mayweather taught McGregor that he could lose a fight and still get paid, setting the stage for his next three lightweight fights, against Khabib Nurmagomedov and, most recently, consecutive TKO losses to Dustin Poirier.
If Masvidal is correct, and this entire fiasco is simply the first phase of a boxing match, then McGregor will enter the ring as a firm favorite. Bovada, a betting side, lists McGregor at -5000 and Kelly a +1000 underdog. Perhaps the greatest indictment of Conor McGregor’s fall from grace is that this margin isn’t wider.
Of course, McGregor will have to recover from the broken leg he sustained against Dustin Poirier on July 10 before he can fight anyone, “little Vanilla Ice white rappers” or not.
