When AEW Rampage was first announced, the commentary table was absolutely stacked. The fan favorite duo of Taz & Excalibur were backed up by Chris Jericho and Mark Henry. A four man booth was chaotic, and Henry really wasn’t well suited to the role – often finding it hard to get into the conversation. AEW has noticed this and addressed the issue, with Henry taking a new role – and FTW Champion Ricky Starks getting a weekly commentary gig.
A Permanent Change To The Rampage Commentary Desk
While speaking with WrestleTalk, Ricky Starks would confirm that this is a permanent change to the booth. He was there this past week to call the action, but we now know it was not a one time thing.
“I am definitely proud of AEW, the work that I’ve done in AEW, and the work that I continue to do. And the fact that I think so much that they appreciate me that they made me a permanent commentator for Rampage, replacing Mark. So, I love that fact, I love the fact that the work that I’ve done with Sting, Darby, and all of these things in such a small time frame, will last forever. I want more though. I really do, I really want to push myself more and really explore the depths of my talent and get out of my comfort zone a bit.”
Starks is truly one of the best AEW has, and will grow into perhaps their best all around talent in due time – and this mindset is why.
Ricky Starks Is No Stranger To Commentary
Starks is no stranger to a commentary role, having been frequently a guest on AEW Dark. He’s got natural chemistry with Taz & Excalibur because of this, and it’s hard to not develop chemistry with someone as charismatic as Chris Jericho. Mark Henry would have settled into the role, but was too soft spoken to help him stand out.
Henry has found a perfect niche on AEW Rampage however, with his pre-main event interview segments instantly creating a big match feel. He’s excellent as a backstage interviewer, which is a well suited role for him. Henry is great for adding a real sports feel, and will hopefully handle interviews on Dynamite & Dark as well.
