NJPW G1 Climax 2021 Night Seven Recap: KENTA Brings Fight To Shingo Takagi

It’s time for more A-Block action in the 2021 G1 Climax. Things are really heating up, as we have O-Khan leading the pack, Zack Sabre Jr on an absolute submission roll, and a wounded Shingo Takagi in the pack. Only four tournament matches today due to Tetusya Naito having to forfeit – but BUSHI has stepped up to the plate.

Zack Sabre Jr. Takes Great-O-Khan Down

In what would have been a chance for Yujiro Takahasi to get one over on his former No Limit tag team partner, instead he gets BUSHI. The L.I.J Junior Heavyweight would take the fight to Takahashi fast and hard, but Takahashi is taking this year seriously and would easily overpower the Junior Heavyweight. Big Juice got the win, and this is a win that could help Takahashi keep pushing forward.

First match of tournament action would see Tomohiro Ishii meet a fellow heavy hitter in Tanga Loa. Loa is really focused at this point, laying in his strikes and not wasting as much time with trash talking. He’d have the best of him brought out by Ishii, really showing he’s a son of Haku. However, despite a strong showing, Ishii fought through the pain and damage to nail a huge Vertical Drop Brainbuster for the win.

One of the most important matches in the block was next – as O-Khan matched up with Zack Sabre Jr. This was always going to be a technical marvel to behold – and they never hit the ropes a single time throughout. It was a back and forth war of submission attempts. O-Khan showed his skills, and had a few close attempts. However once “How about these legs” was applied and the arm went straight? ZSJ got his fourth straight submission win.

Shingo Takagi and Kota Ibushi Get Wins Before Their Clash

After the intermission, we’d get an interesting one. Toru Yano & Kota Ibushi. Yano was already up to 6 points, while the winner of the past two G1 Climax tournaments lagged behind at a mere 4 points. There was little time to waste for Ibushi, and Yano pulled a bag over his head and sent him outside. He’d wrap him up in the ring apron, and nearly get the count out win. Ibushi nailed a Boma-Ye & Kamigoye, and really earned these two points.

Finally in the main event, we had a decades old grudge that needed some settling. Back in 2008 in Dragon Gate, KENTA sent Shingo Takagi to the hospital with a Go To Sleep. Tonight, a wounded Shingo looks for revenge. The right arm was damaged coming in thanks to Zack Sabre Jr, and KENTA gladly abused it. Shingo was stubborn and kept using it for lariats, and would have to get creative to nail some signature blows. KENTA had intentions of using some exposed steel, only to be shoved into it twice and slayed with Last of The Dragon. Up next for Shingo is Kota Ibushi.

    Who’s Block Is It Anyways?

After this night of action, the A-Block standings look like this.

Great O-Khan, Zack Sabre, Jr – 8 points

Kota Ibushi, KENTA, Shingo Takagi, Toru Yano – 6 points

Tomohiro Ishii, Yujiro Takahashi – 4 points

    Tanga Loa – 2 points

    Tetsuya Naito – 0 points
