Another week, another “Squash Match Masters”! This time we’re looking at a multiple-time World Champion and current AEW color commentator and star, Paul Wight—or Big Show as he is better known. Let’s take a look at three of his best squashes starting with one from his early WWE run!
Some Behemoth Calling Himself “Big Show” Plants a Jobber Like He Was Corn (WWE Metal, 10/09/99)
This will be different from the other two featured squashes as Chaz—formerly of the Headbangers and Lo Down—gets in a smidgen of offense against the 7-footer. Not that it did him any good because, after that clothesline, it was a done deal following the Showstopper.
Big Show put a little extra stank on it for good measure as well. Remember when the Chokeslam was called “The Showstopper” just to be within theme like “The Stone Cold Stunner” and “The Rock Bottom”?
Twins Totally Terminated by Troublesome Tower of Terror! Details at 10 (WCW Saturday Night 05/05/98)
Brotherly tag team The Power Company showed up for action against the World Tag Team Champion the Giant—who believes he and Sting are partners.
This wasn’t going to go well for Dave and Dean Power. First, they’re on WCW Saturday Night. That’s a red flag but the biggest red flag was heading down the entrance aisle to the nWo theme.
Big Show performs four moves in this match. He buries his boot in the face of one of the Powers, gorilla press slams one Power onto the other, powerbombs one of them, and finishes the other with a Chokeslam.
After that, he drapes the Tag belts over their fallen bodies and pins them with one finger each! That’s all he needed! Five-star squash match.
The Giant 1v4’s Some Bums…and Wins! (WCW Saturday Night, 06/12/96)
This is my all-time favorite Big Show squash. Mark Starr, Prince Iaukea, Rex King, and the future Fake Sting teamed up to this one.
The Giant—at the time WCW World Champion—had lumped up guys in one vs. Two handicap bouts before but will they down him this time?
Is your cabeza loose? Of course, they don’t down him in this match. They send Prince Iaukea in who gets chokeslammed with authority after his crossbody bounces off of him. Next, Rex King comes in and catches a chokeslam off the bat.
Mark Starr and The Cobra pace the apron as if to see who is going to get spanked next. The Giant pins both Iaukea and King at the same time he catches Starr off the top rope and dunks him. Finally, The Cobra comes in because…he has to, obviously.
Two whole blows and a failed scoop slam later, he gets goozled and chokeslammed as well. Big Show pins both men and takes this in convincing fashion. The match was so short and it was so dominated by The Giant that I could a move-for-move recap of it, folks. It’s a fun squash so check it out below!
