Mark Eiglarsh, who happens to be a criminal defence attorney, has given his take on American actor Jussie Smollett’s upcoming trial.
Defence Attorney Claims Actor Jussie Smollett May Have To Testify At Trial After Faking Being A Victim Of A Hate Crime
The actor is set to go on trial this week after accusations that he had made plans for some people to carry out a hate crime with him being a ‘victim’, after which he reported it to the authorities as a real thing.
The incident had allegedly occurred three years ago, when Jussie told the authorities that he had been a victim of an apparent attack that involved racist and homophobic remarks.
It was during this time that the actor informed the police that two men decided to throw a noose around his neck, after which these men poured chemicals over him.
Shortly after, Jussie apparently stated that these people were supporters of previous United States President Donald Trump.
Given that there are suggestions that Jussie had paid $3,500 to orchestrate this whole thing, Mark believes that Jussie may have no choice but to testify on trial and take the stand given the severity of the claims.
During an interview with Fox News, the attorney said: “He might have to take the witness stand. He’s an actor, so he has an advantage over almost anyone who is going to take the witness stand.
“He knows how to portray characters, so he’d be playing the role potentially of a person who has been victimised.”
And yet, not everybody sees it that way. Another criminal defence attorney, by the name of Stephen Komie, has argued that testifying could end up backfiring.
Jessie has already been accused of lying to the authorities on one occasion, and if it transpires that he has done it again at trial, he could face some jail time.
In an official statement, Stephen remarked: “He is his own most dangerous enemy if he gets on the witness stand. That’s what could trigger a ride to the penitentiary. Judges do not like perjury.”
This trial promises to be a fascinating one, with many people speculating on how Jussie will fight these serious charges. Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
