While we already know that Sunday will be the last time we’re graced with Beth Phoenix on NXT commentary, it could see two more names leave. Right now, both Johnny Gargano & Kyle O’Reilly are working their final matches for WWE with their current contracts. Johnny Gargano has signed an extension to work the WarGames match on Sunday, and Kyle O’Reilly is set to team with Von Wagner as they challenge for the NXT Tag Team Championships. However, WWE is hoping to keep both names on contract into the future.
WWE Sees The Potential In Johnny Gargano After The Way
As per Fightful Select, WWE has offered both men new contracts. Right now, the fan perception of both men in WWE is that they have no future on the main roster. However, Gargano really proved himself with his time in The Way – where he helped make stars of Indi Hartwell, Dexter Lumis & Austin Theory. Now on his way out, he’s made Carmelo Hayes, Bron Breakker, and likely anyone who touches him in WarGames a star.
That is a quick way to build up some seriously good will with the top brass of WWE. WWE recognizes Gargano as a workhorse who makes people look fantastic. If kept in NXT, he will make some stars, and if sent to Smackdown or RAW – he’d make a perfect United States or Intercontinental Champion.
Kyle O’Reilly Has Less Holding Him To WWE
There’s less to Kyle O’Reilly. He signed a one week extension for the tag team match at WarGames, and WWE wants to keep him around – but have not seen the same potential that was found with Gargano. He’s a talented wrestler, but considering they almost turned Adam Cole into a manager on the main roster – the second best singles star of The Undisputed Era doesn’t have a bright future.
There is little keeping O’Reilly here, especially as two thirds of the OG Undisputed Era have already made their way to AEW. The tag team with Von Wagner seems a temporary fit at best, and unlikely to claim gold on Sunday unless O’Reilly signs a new deal.
