Once again, NJPW was able to run two big shows in Tokyo Dome to kick off the year. The first two nights of Wrestle Kingdom are in the books, with a third on the way tomorrow as NJPW takes on Pro Wrestling NOAH in Yokohama Stadium. However, one man will not be making it to his scheduled match on that card – as KENTA has suffered major injuries, and Jeff Cobb could be out as well.
KENTA Left Tokyo Dome In Rough Shape
Injuries to KENTA is no shock for those who watched his Hardcore match with Hiroshi Tanahashi. KENTA finished that match as a bloody mess after being tipped off a ladder and landing face first onto a trash can. The following crash through a table also didn’t help him much, and now we have the full injury report from NJPW1972.com.
“After his match on January 5 in the Tokyo Dome, KENTA has sustained a dislocated left hip, a broken nose, tendon damage to his finger, and severe lacerations to his back.
As a result, he will not be cleared to participate at Wrestle Kingdom 16 in Yokohama Arena Saturday January 8. We apologise to fans who were looking forward to seeing KENTA wrestle, and appreciate your understanding.
KENTA was scheduled to team with Takashi Sugiura and Kazushi Sakuraba on the card. There will now be a mystery partner for Sugiura-Gun.”
Jeff Cobb Needs An MRI
Meanwhile, Jeff Cobb is out of action as well. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Jeff Cobb is scheduled for an MRI for his knee following his matches during Wrestle Kingdom. Cobb was injured in the trios match on January 4th, and still worked the singles match with Naito on the following night.
The extent of his injuries are not yet known, but should be revealed in the coming days. Cobb looked a bit unsteady during the match with Naito, but it is impressive he was able to work a high level match while hurt.
