It’s Wednesday and that means another week in the wrestling war! We’ve got another ep of AEW Dynamite to look forward to tonight, and as always, a fair few major matches being advertised well in advance! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here to give some analysis of what to expect, and what brought us here!
And for the last bit of tonight’s preview, we have a special treat. Two weeks ago, Scorpio Sky, alongside Frankie Kazarian, defended the tag team titles against Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara. With Jericho as world champ, it made for our first champion vs. champion affair, in a sense. SCU ended up coming out on top, with Scorpio pinning Jericho at that, marking the first loss of any kind for Le Champion in AEW, let alone the first time he’s been pinned!
Now, after being outsmarted in a confrontation last week, Chris Jericho must return the favor and defend his title this time around!
AEW World Championship: Chris Jericho (c) vs. Scorpio Sky
So okay, full disclosure. I don’t like to make broad sweeping statements about entire populations, there’s always atleast one person out there with a certain thought or opinion. But I will say that there are probably less than a hundred people out there in the entire world who actually think Scorpio Sky has a chance at winning here. It’s basically all but impossible. Be it the disparity in name value, the lack of build for this match (two weeks is better than some can manage mind you, but it’s still two weeks) the fact that it’s literally Scorpio’s first singles match in AEW, and of course the biggest factor being that he’s currently the tag champ and there’s no real reason to have a double champ this soon into either title’s lineage.
All that, and it’s a match on TV rather than PPV… Darby Allin was probably a more realistic bet back when he made his challenge. Still, whether he can possibly win is hardly the point. The idea, similar to that example, is to simply present Scorpio as being close to – if not right on – Jericho’s level. Which is not something that should seem so farfetched, really. They clearly do see a big future for Scorpio as a singles star, perhaps when his older SCU partners are ready to slow things down. That they’re already playing with this is a great sign for him. Plus, they want to present the tag champs as being equitable to the singles world champ.
The goal is simple. 1) Have a big main event. 2) Have a really good match. 3) Make sure Scorpio Sky looks like a star.
As long as you’re achieving these things, the finish is not all that big a deal. And I myself think they can do just that.
That’s all for the AEW Dynamite previews, but I’ll be here live to recap the show with the full play-by-play as it happens! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer and I hope to see you there!
