It’s Wednesday and that means another week in the wrestling war! We’ve got another ep of AEW Dynamite to look forward to tonight, and as always, a fair few major matches being advertised well in advance! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here to give some analysis of what to expect, and what brought us here!
To start with, we’ve got a match setup in advance last week…
Hangman Page vs. MJF (Winner presented with the Dynamite Diamond Ring)
Last week, we saw the Dynamite Dozen battle royal, where the last two men remaining would square off in a singles match seven days later. In spite of a stirring guest appearance from Billy Gunn, this match saw MJF sneak his way to the finish and eliminate Jungleboy to come face-to-face with Hangman Page at the end.
This is an interesting match up as it’s a battle between two important parts of AEW’s future. Page and MJF are, respectively, the potential top face and top heel of 2020 and beyond. Both are guys they have a lot of plans for, to say the least, and this should make for a very hot match.
Notably, it’s also one that’s a lot more than a week in the making. Page actually last eliminated MJF in the Casino Royale back at Double Or Nothing in May, and the two have been at odds from a distance ever since. Even later in that night, MJF was opposing Page, a situation that ended up leading to them both being involved in a fatal four way match at Fyter Fest, though Page ended up pinning Jimmy Havoc in that encounter.
The two never did end up meeting in a singles match, not until tonight. So this is actually a bout that’s been a long time coming. And the stakes are fairly high, as the winner will be presented a diamond ring that’s been hyped up quite a bit. It’s been said to be priced at 45k, making it the most expensive ring in all of sports. It sounds like a very, very MJF thing to have, to say the very least.
Another key point about this match…
In a fun little twist, the Dynamite Diamond will be presented by none other than Diamond Dallas Page himself. This is fairly significant, given that DDP has been highlighted quite a bit as being a mentor figure for Cody Rhodes. The same Cody who MJF, of course, stunningly betrayed at AEW Full Gear and cost him his only chance at ever being AEW World Champion. This would be a tense presentation if MJF won this, to say the least.
So it goes without saying that there’s a lot of reason to assume that MJF is taking this. But of course, with how Hangman’s been positioned since Day 1 and how steadily over he’s become throughout the year, he’s a difficult one to count out.
Still, with Wardlow and potentially the rest of the Inner Circle backing him up, Page might’ve picked a real bad time to leave the Elite… gotta go with MJF here.
