As surprises go, few could match Jake Roberts walking out on last week’s AEW Dynamite to confront Cody Rhodes; the fact he had a pre-prepared intro video and music notwithstanding.
Full disclosure: I’m a huge Jake Roberts fan, and seeing him come out was nothing short of awesome. It was hard hearing how rough his voice has gotten over the years, but he still delivered his bit with precision and inflection that made my hair stand on end.
But who’s his client?
While we don’t expect him to wrestle aside from an occasional bump or exchange of punches, he’s going to have an active angle. Obviously, he’s going to bring in someone else, or work with them to cause the mayhem he was so gifted at throughout his career.
But who will it be?
The obvious choice, and one that’s dominated the internet for the last week, is Brodie Lee.
Fresh off his release and end of his no compete clause, Luke Harper is switching back to his Indie name, Brodie Lee, and is expected to make his AEW debut before too long.
This is expecting a lot, but reports have stated that AEW was interested in him, so he’s most likely going to be there at some point.
What we can expect
Roberts pretty much laid it all out for us: he wants to take what Cody has.
The time is ripe to strike with Cody’s allies tied up in feuds of their own and the Elite fracturing.
It’s safe to say Roberts may pull out some of his bag of tricks to torment Brandi Rhodes to destabilize Cody and push him further than MJF could. Lee will then make his presence known and things will go from there.
As for Arn Anderson, he and Roberts crossed paths in the WWE and probably elsewhere, so they’ll face off in some way, though contact will be limited due to Anderson’s neck injury. While he may be a tough son of a gun, there’s no point in pushing that point. Though it would be cool if we could turn back the clock to their primes and see them in the ring together in AEW.
As for what Lee will bring, let’s just say it could be a good thing Rhodes doesn’t mind scaring his face. This could usher in a more brutal style than we’ve seen in AEW aside from a couple of matches here and there.
MJF left in the cold
Of course, this effectively ended Rhodes; feud with MJF. At least, for the time being. While Lee and Roberts make Rhodes’ life a living nightmare, MJF could slide into a feud with just about anyone, though the capable faces in AEW are limited. Maybe they have another signing we’re not privy to, or he may even start feuding with Jungle Boy of the Jurassic Express.
He may even stick around just to needle Rhodes a little more.
With new talent being added, AEW has plenty of options to pursue, but more than the rest, it’ll be fun to see what Brodie Lee can do with Vince McMahon’s creative shackles removed and Jake Roberts managing him. This looks like it’s going to be a fun couple of weeks.
