AEW Stars Jon Moxley & Cody Rhodes Want To Bring Back Professional Wrestling

Last night at AEW Revolution, we got a satisfying conclusion to the months long feud between Jon Moxley and Chris Jericho. In it, we saw the scrappy fan favorite go through hell, getting injured by the heel to remove him from the picture, only to fight his way through a hoard of henchmen and defeat their boss to become champion. The story of Jon Moxley vs. The Inner Circle & Chris Jericho was a timeless one, one that would have worked just as well back in the 1970’s as it did today.

It was simple yet effective storytelling, without the need of twists and turns to keep fans guessing. They just followed a logical route with a story and stuck to it. It is as old school as an angle gets, it was classic professional wrestling. That is what AEW is trying to bring back, if not with a modern twist.

Jon Moxley Spoke With Cody Rhodes A Year Ago

The new AEW Champion spoke with the press following his victory over Chris Jericho, and while speaking with them he recalled a phone call from a year ago that he had with Cody Rhodes. This would have been around the time when he was starting to get ready to leave WWE. He has not been quiet about being displeased with how WWE handles things, even going as far to say in his Talk Is Jericho episode that if only WWE existed, he would personally train and reseed a new generation of wrestlers outside WWE to enjoy his craft again.

That goal lines up well with one of Cody Rhodes, as during that phone call with Cody, the man with the new worst tattoo in wrestling had the following to say. “Let’s bring pro wrestling back. Pro wrestling that you grew up on! Not crap, not sports entertainment, not scripted canned horsecrap. Pro wrestling I’m telling you, it works! It’s like mac ‘n cheese, it’s always good, it always works and we brought that back.”

    Modernizing The Past

Being the son of a wrestling legend like Cody Rhodes, it’s no surprise he holds he past in such high regard. He was raised on a simpler era, and while AEW might maintain the flash of WWE, and the high action of modern indies, they have balanced things out nicely. For every goofy character like Orange Cassidy, you have a classic wrestler like Cody or Jon Moxley. For every high paced spot fest, you have a story being told like Cody vs. Dustin. They are balancing classic storytelling with enough flash to keep people invested.

Would you agree that AEW has been able to start to bring back professional wrestling of the past? Do you think are they becoming a second WWE? Let us know what you think in the comment sections down below.

A wrestling fan practically since birth, who has been hooked since he got his first toy wrestling ring for Christmas as a child. Since getting access to the internet, he's watched more wrestling than he could ever remember from all around the world. It's hard to keep track of what happens in the wild world of professional wrestling, but he always tries to stay up to date. Note: No relation to Tully Blanchard of Four Horsemen fame (probably).
