WWC and La Liga Cancel Shows in Puerto Rico

The two big wrestling companies on the island, La Liga Wrestling, and World Wrestling Council (WWC) were hoping for big turnouts this weekend.

As you, dear reader may already know, COVID-19 has caused total cancelations of sporting events across the world. Puerto Rico wasn’t an exception. The Corona Virus forced the hand of the two main wrestling promotions on the island to cancel their shows on Saturday and Sunday.

    WWC’s Alianza Letal

WWC had a big show on Saturday. It was the continuation of their alliance with Savio Vega’s International Wrestling Association (IWA PR). Last weekend, IWA PR showed success with such alliance, bringing 800 fans to the far east of the island, Humacao.

On Saturday, WWC planned to bring the IWA PR in “Alianza Letal”. The show had a big main event: Orlando Colon (WWE’s Epico) vs. Gilbert for the WWC Universal Championship. Plus, Nick Aldis vs. Carlito for the Ten Pounds of Gold. IWA PR was supposed to answer to WWC’s challenge and bring symbolic names like Manny Ferno.

For WWC, it was guaranteed that they would fill the Bayamon arena with at least 1,200 fans. The Carlos Colon company is finally in the front seat of Puerto Rican wrestling.

But now, the show has been delayed and that success, which the WWC-IWA PR alliance was going to bring, will have to wait.

    La Liga Wrestling

For the newly named La Liga Wrestling, Sunday’s show was the big test. The company suffered an embarrassing turnout last evening, barely having 100 fans.

Many promoters and producers were ready to turn their pressure up. WWC and IWA PR shattered their confidence, and their new, modernizing experiment, has left fans waiting for more.

The main event for Sunday was uninspiring: Star Roger (C) vs. BJ for the WWL Heavyweight Championship. Other than that, the company was empty, with barely able to make new feuds that could bring fans to their new arena.

Although many believed in the WWL project, their roster seems dim. Mike Mendoza, their biggest star, is currently without the main title. Angel Fashion is lost in the shuffle; while Mark Davidson doesn’t seem to be fit to be a heel right now. WWC and IWA PR have taken the best talent. And yet, help is coming La Liga’s way. Electro, arguably the most exciting prospect of Puerto Rican wrestling, will be exclusive for La Liga. The former IWA PR World Champion was the crown jewel of the heel stable, Puro Macho and is arguably a favorite of the fans.

It is uncertain when Puerto Rican wrestling is coming back, but for now, it seems that WWC has missed a big chance and that La Liga had a new breath of fresh air.
