When Lance Archer left NJPW in early 2020, everyone knew he’d be on his way to the new company on the block, AEW. Since then he’s challenged for both the AEW World & TNT Championships, before finally claiming his first singles gold just two weeks ago. Ironically enough, his championship win was a NJPW championship, defeating Jon Moxley for the IWGP United States Championship. After a victory over Hikule’o, Archer has a massive challenge ahead in The Ace of The Universe, Hiroshi Tanahashi.
This Match Is Set For NJPW Resurgence On August 14th
While there was some confusion during AEW Dynamite on if this match would take place in Japan or the United States, we now know that we’re going to see this match as part of the NJPW of America special event, NJPW Resugrence. This show comes on August 14th, meaning Tanahashi is coming over to America.
Archer vs. Tanahashi is the fourth match announced for the show, alongside Jay White vs. David Finlay for the NEVER Openweight Championship, Fred Rosser, Fred Yehi & Wheeler Yuta vs. TJP, Clark Conners & Ren Narita, and Alex Coughlin vs. Karl Fredericks. This match definitely stands out as one of the best on the card, and could potentially see a title change.
Could Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Moxley Come At All Out?
Right now, Jon Moxley isn’t doing much in AEW following his feud with The Elite. He’s been focused on the IWGP United States Championship, and could be looking for a rematch. With Tanahashi being a favorite going into the match with Archer, and Moxley also wanting a match with Tanahashi? This potentially could be the set up for a huge match at All Out.
Moxley has been in talks to face a “major NJPW superstar” at All Out, hence his focus on this championship, and you can’t get a bigger superstar than Tanahashi unless they fly Okada over. It would suck to see Archer’s big win simply lead to a transitional reign, but a major match between Tanahashi & Moxley could steal the show at All Out.
