Comedian Jon Stewart has defended his friend and star Dave Chappelle after the latter’s sketch show entitled ‘The Closer’ came under fire over its jokes that were deemed to be mocking the LGBTQ community.
Comedian Jon Stewart Defends Dave Chappelle Following His Netflix Controversy
The show, which is contracted to Netflix’, has been under massive scrutiny as Netflix employees walked out of their workplace in protest at what they believed to be politically incorrect behaviour.
And things turned even more bitter as the protestors demanded that the CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos remove Dave’s show from the network. And yet, Jon has chosen to see things differently.
He believes that this controversy has just been as a result of a lack of communication, and therefore it can easily be resolved. In an interview with TMZ, Jon said: “That’s a different element, but I know he’s one of my favourite people on the planet.
“He’s just a good, decent… – you know, if there is any miscommunication, I’m sure that – I love that dude, like as a person.”
Jon does have a point, but it looks as though Dave may be responsible for the absence of communication. He had reportedly been invited by the organiser of the protest, Ashlee Marie Preston, to come and speak with her in order to get to the bottom of the dispute.
Dave, though, was absent as it turned out he was at a nightclub in London. Clearly, the comedian did not do himself any favours. Nevertheless, Jon continued to defend his friend. He added: “I know his intention is never hurtful – like, he’s just not that kind of person.
“And if it is [hurtful], it’s certainly unintentional. He’s really – he’s a good man.” The only way that Dave could resolve things is to issue an apology.
But in doing so, he would go against the very thing that has made him so popular with the fans: saying what he thinks without regard for what others have to say.
In addition, if he were to retract his jokes, there is also a feeling that he could lose those fans that have continued to stay loyal to him in the face of such adversity.
