It’s time for more Heels as we get into episode three “Cheap Heat”. This episode comes in hot and goes hard at the final stretch. Let’s get into it!

    The Fastest-Paced Episode So Far

“Cheap Heat” opens with Tom “King” Spade’s suicide. Ace was at home asleep and he’s the one who found his body after hearing the gunshot.

    Heels S1E3 "Cheap Heat" Recap

Jack is sorting things out for the next show and has friend and former DWL wrestler CM Punk (CM Punk) come through for a World title match. He is also attempting to reconcile with Ace by going into his promo and letting him know of his importance to DWL.

On that note, Crystal was right. The promo did need a little more and it was cheesy-positive. Wild Bill’s been busy calling Crystal for a reason which will be revealed later.

During that night’s show, the DWL guys are bonding backstage. The big friendly Bobby Pin is constantly trying to fit in and be one of the boys was Rooster is really on the kid’s ass all the time.

He also gets on Ace saying that his boots aren’t even scuffed meaning he’s not a good partner in the ring. Even Apocalypse and Diego have to reign him in. The thing with Rooster is that he is annoyed that Jack is focusing on pushing Ace and everything else but giving him a push.

Also, there’s this side story with Staci Spade having a girl’s night with some friends. They end up going to the DWL show when a waiter—who is a big fan—brings up the show.

Ricky Rabies shows up and there are some concerns about Rabies bringing in bloodshed to a DWL show but it’s for an entrance. Ace is scheduled to go over Bobby Pin and comes out to give a face promo.

The fans aren’t with it and boo him throughout. Then they shower the ring with packets of tissues since they remember he cried in the ring. This infuriates Ace who storms off with Crystal.

    Finishing Stretch

In the second act of the show, things move pretty damn fast. Jack Spade and Ricky Rabies have a wild match that is peak, over-the-top, cheesy sports entertainment. It was well done and Rabies called for the finish after his knee starts acting up again.

Jack obviously holds on to the DWL title in a match that pretty much had two heels. On that note, DWL doesn’t have any tag matches or a Tag Team title? Huh.

Ace goes outside where Rooster is having a smoke and trying to decompress. We find out about Rooster’s background as a veteran wrestler and being viewed as charismatic, athletic, and a good wrestler but never getting his shine with anyone’s main title and believes race has something to do with it.

The younger Spade is on board with the “F*** Jack” train but Rooster states that he’d still make a good heel. At the end of the show, Ace beats Bobby Pin and turns heel—which goes over extremely well. Heels really delivers on these wrestling parts of the show.

    Heels S1E3 "Cheap Heat" Recap

Staci’s friends enjoyed the show, Bobby is excited to have an actual feud and to have been in the main event, and Rooster’s disillusioned with the double push.

Someone else who is disillusioned is Crystal. She figured that she was factored into the plans with Ace but that isn’t the case. When Ace blows up while returning to the back—and in front of everyone—it showed that Ace the heel and the person is the same person.

Also, she’d been getting advice from Ricky Rabies’ valet whom she thought was also his old lady. She was merely his valet and road piece. Looking at Vicky Rabies, she kind of saw her future self if she doesn’t do something to set herself apart.

    The Three Big Reveals

There were three big reveals in this episode. We find out that Wild Bill became a social media hit after ranting on a flight while drunk and naked while wearing a prototype of his employer’s championship belt.

It’s revealed that Jack gave out the tissues for fans to throw in order to force Ace into being a heel. Also, while Jack is talking to Ace about being a heel, Ace mentions that their dad was a face and he’s expected to be one as well.

Jack reveals that their father shot himself knowing that Ace was home in response to that.

    Heel S1E3 Verdict: Diamond (5/5)

I loved this episode of Heels. The episodes with a DWL show in the second half just hit differently. The matches were presented well and in the context of this isn’t a wrestling show, it’s a show about wrestling.

I’ve been pulling for Bobby Pin. He’s the purest person on the show and just wants to do well at wrestling and as a babyface. The other pure person is the scummy, carny, weird Ricky Rabies.

He’s not scummy as in a scumbag, he just seems like you’d have a film on your hand if he shook it. However, he truly loves wrestling and is appreciative of getting to wrestle for DWL and earn money.

I’d like to see more of him on the show. CM Punk did a great job in this role. There was a “magical Negro” approach with the advice Rooster gave to Ace.

That said, I liked that there was some disillusionment prior to the advice and a bit of resentment after the advice worked. There was a lead-up and a follow-through with it rather than just him giving advice and nothing else being done with it.

All around, another strong episode and the banger of the season so far. Let’s see if Heels can keep it up.
