One of the most infamous matches in AEW history came in 2020, when Kenny Omega took on the unknown name of Alan Angels. Taking place during the peak of the pandemic era of AEW, fans were shocked when the match was not a simple squash – and when Angels would actually kick out of the V-Trigger knee strike. This got Angels a deeper run in AEW, which only just ended in 2022 – with him feeling he’s got more to gain travelling the world and developing as a wrestler. However, he doesn’t forget what Omega did for him that day.
Alan Angels Didn’t Care About Fan Hate Following This Match
While speaking with the Two Man Power Trip Of Wrestling podcast, he’d have a chance to reflect on the match with Kenny Omega in 2020. He’d say the following about the controversy surrounding that match.
“Yeah, of course, I heard it all. Yeah, I didn’t really care. My dad gets more upset about that stuff than I do … I could care less. Like, I’m living my dream right now. I’m doing this for a living and that’s all I could ever ask for. So, if there is some guys online that want to talk sh*t about me, or whatever it may be, that’s fine.”
Part of what made this so shocking, was that Angels had previously been squashed by Lance Archer in just two minutes – before hanging with Omega for over six minutes. They’d run this match back in 2021, with it lasting seven minutes before Omega put Angels down. As of the time of writing, this was the most recent match of Omega on AEW Dynamite.
Being Told To Someday Pass The Favour On, Claiming He Owes His Career To Kenny Omega
Following this match, Angels would get advice from Cody Rhodes. Angels would be quoted saying the following.
“Cody told me after the match, he said, ‘Just be sure when you’re in that position that you do the same for that next young guy. ’m definitely going to keep that in mind. If I am ever in that position where, you know, I’m the big name on the card and I’m wrestling someone that’s relatively unheard of, I’m going to give him some stuff … I think I was surprised at how much I got. I thought maybe I would get, I don’t know, like a few punches or some sh*t, but I didn’t think I was going to be bumping him and stuff like that. And like I said, I owe my career to like, three or four people and Kenny is definitely on that list of guys that I really owe my career to.”
