Sometimes in an industry like professional wrestling, you have that one breakout match. However, sometimes circumstances outside of your control prevent that match from happening. This could have been the case for indy wrestler Nate Webb, who had a chance to face one of the most legendary professional wrestlers of all time in Macho Man Randy Savage, a chance that was taken from him due to one of the biggest terrorist attacks of the modern era shaking the USA to its core. Nate Webb was set to face Randy Savage in a match that would have taken place in Times Square, and it was going to take place on September 12th, 2001.
Nate Webb & Randy Savage Worked As MC’s For A Slim Jim Tour
This story was told in the past by Webb on a podcast with Gregory Irons, the Iron-On Podcast. However, it re-emerged when AEW star Marko Stunt asked on Twitter “What’s your biggest, not able to happen, dream match?” Webb would reply by saying “I was supposed to wrestle Randy Savage on 9/12/01, in Times Square, on Good Morning America.”
This was just two years after Nate Webb made his debut, and he was getting a chance to wrestle Randy Savage on a major show. On a Slim Jim funded tour that was a cross between bands like The Ataris, New Found Glory with some midget wrestling. Randy Savage was the MC for the concerts, and Webb was the MC for the wrestling.
They were working together all tour, and to cap it off they were going to wrestle to close it out.It was just ahead of Randy Savage playing the character of Bonesaw in the Sam Rami Spiderman movie, but he’d have been himself for this match. The only reason this match didn’t happen was because of the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers, something which has shaken America to this day.
Webb Is An Indy Legend All The Same
No one was ready to go to a wrestling show a day after this, and the match with Savage was cancelled. He’d go on to have a solid career, still being named alongside men like Chris Hero & Colt Cabana all the same. Webb still shows up on shows for companies like Game Changer Wrestling, but never got to a major company like WWE, but perhaps that was by choice.
Who knows what could have changed had he got to wrestle Savage in a high profile match so early in his career. This also would have led to him being on Good Morning America, and a Howard Stern Show appearance was also in the works.
