Max Holloway waits for no man. Although many would argue that he’s more than earned a trilogy fight – and title shot – against reigning featherweight champ Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski, the Hawaiian fighter is determined to stay active. He won’t wait around for a shot at the strap, and he has no time for anyone who would.
Holloway told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that he doesn’t wait around in the queue for the elevator when he can take the stairs.
Max Holloway Blasts UFC “Elevator Divas”
“They told us we didn’t have to [take the fight]. They told us we could wait it out, but I was like, ‘I ain’t about that. We ain’t about that.’ I talked to my team, I let my team know and they were all on board. And we’re here today.
The UFC, they don’t have this tournament structure, so a lot of these guys, they’re just waiting at the elevator. You know? They’re waiting at the elevator to go to the top.
And I’m not an elevator waiter. There’s no line at the stairs, so that’s where you can find me — at the stairs. This is not new for us. This is not new for us at all. For me and my team, it’s very important to not be elevator divas. I want to just get out there and keep doing the damn thing.
Holloway continued, declaring those who wait for good things to come to them in the fight game “elevator divas”. “Everybody else can figure out [who I’m talking about].
You guys can choose who the elevator divas are in this sport, but you know your boy will be at the stairs and we’ll be running up and down those bad boys.”
Max Holloway is set to return to the Octagon this Saturday when he takes on Yair Rodriguez. These two highly-ranked contenders facing off makes this a serious title contention fight. With reigning champ Alexander Volkanovski fresh off a convincing unanimous decision win over Brian Ortega, the winner of this fight may well be the one to break the champ’s win streak.
Max Holloway is currently 2-0 against Volkanovski, but many believe Holloway actually won their last fight, which went to the champ in a controversial split decision.
Either way, Max Holloway’s happy to “take the stairs” and remind fans why he’s such a firm favorite. Do you think Holloway deserves the trilogy fight against Volkanovksi? Let us know in the comments.
