Recently, we’ve seen Progress Wrestling regain some of their lost hype. Months of running empty arena shows was a far cry from what fans wanted from the one-time super indy, but just two shows with fans back in the arena has them back in the news. Following Chapter 128, we have great reason to get excited about Progress again, as the NXT UK Champion Ilja Dragunov is back in the promotion.
Cara Noir Was Confronted By Ilja Dragunov
Following his title defence against Dean Allmark, Cara Noir would have one of his greatest rivals confront him. Starting at Chapter 96: True Friends Stab You In The Front, Dragunov & Noir had a thrilling best of three match series – ending at Chapter 99: With A Flake, Please; where Noir beat Dragunov in a Best Two out of Three Falls match.
All three matches were highly acclaimed by fans and critics, and they’d meet one last time in the Fatal Four Way match where Noir would become Progress Champion. Now, it’s time for them to clash once again – as Dragunov has stepped up to Noir once again.
Title Unification Match Incoming?
This comes at a crucial spot in the history of the NXT UK Championship. Dragunov has been champion for arudn 169 days now, but has failed to capture the same interest as champion that WALTER commanded. Ending the 870 day reign was big, but not enough to bring viewers into NXT UK to watch Dragunov in action.
However, running an angle in both NXT UK and Progress Wrestling could generate some hype for Dragunov, Noir, NXT UK & Progress Wrestling. While under new management, Progress is still closely working with WWE – shown with AEW star Anthony Bowens being cut from their recent event. This makes working an angle like this easy, and allows WWE to really spotlight their two top offerings in the UK region.
Another match between Noir & Dragunov alone will generate some hype, but making it a ‘Winner Takes All’ match with two titles on the line will have people talking. Such a match could even potentially sell out a big venue in the region, and could be the main event of a future NXT UK Takeover, if WWE chooses to run another show like that.
