It’s June 1999 which means that it’s time for WCW Great American Bash 1999. This show took place in Baltimore, MD and drew just under 11,680 fans for Kevin Nash defending his WCW World title against Randy Savage. The show is also significant for being the PPV debut of the final WCW logo. Yeah, that one. The Best The No Limit Soldiers team of Konnan and Rey Mysterio faced off against the West Texas Rednecks team of Curt Hennig and Bobby Duncum Jr in a really entertaining, solid match. I really rocked with this match. On its own, it’s good…

It’s Monday which means it’s time to look at some MOVES OF DOOM. This time we’re looking at Yoshihiro Tajiri. Tree of Woe Dropkick Starting off the big standbys for the Japanese Buzzsaw, his running dropkick into an opponent who is trapped in the Tree of Woe is a mildly effective signature attack. It’s fairly simple but Tajiri requires that opportunity when the opponent messes up while on the top turnbuckle for it to be useful. He also needs an opponent who can’t pull himself up and avoid the dropkick. DOOM Scale: 2 out of 5 Brainbuster Also called the…

There aren’t many match concepts that really wow me in wrestling but the Extreme Air Wrestling promotion in Mexico City did it. While the company is dormant, during the early 2010s, they introduced something truly different to wrestling for the high flyers: a special double ring. Extreme Air Wrestling’s Double Ring Concept Should Be Picked Up Their double ring was different from the War Games setup. One ring was your normal ring but the second ring’s apron started about where the top rope of the first ring is. So, you have a normal ring and the tall ring. That second…

WWE Over the Edge 1999 is a show I had to consider doing for “Into the Vault”. It’s a controversial show in WWE’s library because it was the show where Owen Hart lost his life on an entrance stunt just weeks after his 34th birthday. The controversy surrounding this PPV comes from the decision to carry on with the show after a wrestler died in front of almost 16,500 fans. Of course, the edited version of the PPV is available and as usual, we’ll put the matches in “The Best” pile and “The Rest”. Over the Edge 1999 went down…

The Horace Hogan “Wrestling Salvage Yard” was so light and airy, that we’re going to do another one! This time we’ll see if Hardcore Hak, better known as the Sandman, could be salvaged in WCW. Hak’s WCW Run The Sandman arrived in WCW in September 1998 and was supposed to be a white-bread, middle-class neighbor who had disdain for Raven. This would’ve been an interesting character for the Sandman. WCW scrapped that idea and just debuted him as is. He was eventually named Hardcore Hak and fought other ECW alumni in brawls and hardcore matches months before the division was…

Let’s dive into ECW Hardcore Heaven 1999 from Poughkeepsie, NY. The show drew 2,800 for a main event between ECW World champion Taz and Chris Candido. The Best The World Tag Team match saw the Dudley Boyz defend against Balls Mahoney and Spike Dudley in a brief but good brawl. The pace was really good as there wasn’t any meandering time where guys have to get to their opponent or take more time than necessary pulling stuff from under the ring. It was a violent, digestible match. Thumbs up. Super Crazy taking on Taka Michinoku was also a pretty good…

The title says it all: current two-time NWA World Champion Trevor Murdoch is a good fit for the title. He’s that secret sauce that NWA has that very few companies possess. It might be weird since he was a permanent undercarder in WWE but oftentimes, talent can be used better in a different setting. The experience of coming through WWE and getting released can be looked at as finishing school. Sure, developmental polishes a talent into a superstar but the time on the main roster puts what they learned to the test at whatever level they end up. After being…

One of my favorite things about the late 90s were the extreme matches on television. I use “extreme matches” because hardcore is a different thing entirely. I’ll get into it in another article but I’ve thought about hardcore wrestling for a while as a big fan of it. Those matches gave way to Hardcore Divisions in WWE and WCW. Flaws of the Hardcore Divisions First, they were more of the “Falls Count Anywhere Division”. They were the big leagues’ interpretation of ECW’s hardcore style but applied to a weekly format. In a way, it was the ultimate WWE match because…
