We’re catching up on a ton of MLW Fusion ALPHA! I enjoy binging Fusion ALPHA and Major League Wrestling has been on fire in late 2021 with this show! When comes to squash matches, Big Van Vader is a certified legend. This man marveled at mauling mediocre milksops. Here’s a three-pack of some of his best squashes. Harrowing Handicap Encounter Leaves Two Missing Details at 10 (WCW Main Event 5/10/1992) Boy, do I love beasts or monsters eating folks up in handicap matches! It’s even better when the opponents stand no chance despite having the numbers advantage! Doug Cazee and Greg Casey had one such advantage in May 1992 but in the same way that Scott Steiner will no-sell mind-boggling math, numbers don’t matter to Big Van Vader. He…
We haven’t taken a visit to the Wrestling Salvage Yard in a while. Let’s look at WWE SmackDown’s former midcard trio the Mexicools. The Mexicools in WWE This trio of cruiserweights included former WCW Cruiserweight champions Juventud Guerrera and Psicosis as well as former ECW Television champion Super Crazy. The three of them were known for a gimmick that saw them dressed as lawn keepers and riding on out to the ring on a riding mower. I mean, they were actually in mechanic’s jumpsuits but the riding mover easily let you know that WWE was aiming for a Mexican lawn care gimmick—which got mixed reactions. Some fans thought it was cool—remember this was the mid-to-late…
The WWE’s developmental program has a lengthy history dating back to the late 1990s and produced the OVW 4, Shelton Benjamin, and Kurt Angle among others. Prior to that, the WWE used affiliated promotions to add some seasoning to potential superstars. A prime example of this is the USWA—United States Wrestling Association. The company was owned by Jerry Jarrett –and later Jerry Lawler in its final days—and booked by both as well Bill Dundee. The USWA saw future stars such as The Undertaker, Kane, Steve Austin, and The Rock in its ring. With its focus on strong promo work, blood…
La Dama del Silencio—or “The Silent Lady”—isn’t a name that rings any significant bells in wrestling or lucha libre. As a matter of fact, there are many luchadores and luchadoras who ring bells but are still active. However, she is a significant figure in that she is one of Mexico’s most infamous serial killers having an eight-year span and anywhere between 42 and 48 victims. La Mataviejitas: The Old Lady Killer Born Juana Barraza on December 27, 1957 in a Hidalgo suburb, La Dama del Silencio was a huge fan of lucha libre. At 12, her mother once prostituted her for three beers and which resulted…
Starz series Heels is a show that piqued my interest when I first heard the concept. Since I tend to catch television shows late and watch when I can binge, it took a while to get around to it. Created by Michael Waldron (Rick and Morty, Loki, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) and starring Stephen Amell (the Arrowverse) and Alexander Ludwig (Vikings), the show features a strong cast and some super dramatic storytelling. We’re starting with the first episode of Heels, “Kayfabe” before diving into the rest of the first 8-episode season. Welcome to the Duffy Wrestling League The show takes place in…
We’re back with the “Best of the Streak”! After the awesome WrestleMania X-7 showdown with Triple H, the Undertaker was ripping through the WWE and doing as he wished. There’s a new sheriff in town following the sale of WCW with Ric Flair becoming co-owner of the WWE. That has its own main feud between Flair and Vince McMahon but we get this side, branching feud as Flair and the Undertaker eventually cross paths. The Road to WrestleMania X8 This match featured simple build-up. Stretching back to WWE No Mercy 2002, at the time Vince McMahon and Ric Flair were “co-owners” of the…
“Heat” is the subtitle of WWE WrestleMania 13. I miss when WrestleMania was a late March event and when the subtitles were ambiguous. Also, WWE’s promotional posters and video covers correctly featured the wrestlers in the main event—unlike WCW Uncensored 1997 featuring high energy surfer Sting fighting with a Nasty Boy. There wasn’t even a Nasty Boy on the show. Speaking of the main event, we have Sid defending the WWE Championship against The Undertaker in a no disqualification bout. A quick aside, this WrestleMania featured my favorite WM show theme and entrance set. In the late 1990s, WWE’s pay-per-views were often less pronounced and epic-looking than WCW’s. Hell,…
We’re back with something I’ve missed in wrestling for some time: proper squash matches! Let’s look at Squash Match Masters Meng and The Barbarian—the Faces of Fear! Originally members of the Dungeon of Doom in WCW, after the Dungeon dissolved the two remained under the watchful eye of “The Mouth of the South” Jimmy Hart. All videos can be found on YouTube. Polynesian Powerhouses Pulverize Punks into Powder (WCW Saturday Night 9/7/96) Before his TV title run, Prince Iaukea teams up with Jim Powers to take on the Faces of Fear in a match where his team got in an alarming…
It’s time for another “Into the Vault ‘97” and it’s WWE vs. WCW! We’re looking at WCW Uncensored which took place on March 16, 1997. The main event features a triangle elimination bout with the nWo, Team Piper, and Team WCW. WCW Uncensored 1997: The Best Like most WCW pay-per-views during the boom, the gold-quality bouts are usually in the undercard. This show is no different, folks. One of the immediate gems includes the no disqualification, 19-minute failed U.S Heavyweight title defense as champion Eddie Guerrero takes on 90s rival Dean Malenko. Right after that, we have an exciting bout between Ultimate Dragon and Psychosis…
