Kevin Owens’ current story arc is a resurgent for him, but also fans that have missed a face that’s smart enough not to stand there and be jumped constantly (Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins, looking at you, guys). It’s also awesome to see the old stunner dusted off and fully implemented as his finishing move.
More than harkening back to the days of Stone Cold, this arc actually makes it fun to see Shane McMahon sucking up air time again. It’s also shown he hasn’t lost any skills in the ring.
During his feud with Kofi Kingston, their matches were rough and ill timed. Sure, it could’ve been him still working off the rust from being injured, but since then, he’s been awesome in the ring whether it was against the other New Day or Drew McIntyre, as we saw on Monday.
He’s injected a much needed energy into Smackdown that’s been lacking for a while despite being a solid show overall. Of course, this brings to mind what he’s going to do after he (hopefully) beats Shane at SummerSlam and sends him back to behind the camera.
Maybe he’ll become the new face of the organization? Maybe he and Ziggler get into a feud that’ll bring out the best in them. Or, what would be a really cool angle, Drew McIntyre breaks away from Shane and he and Owens feud. Maybe even face off for a title or two.
Given that the WWE is reportedly going to bring back the brand separation (so not a fan) after Smackdown moves to Fox, they have some time to develop together before then.
It’s obvious both have the ability, and in McIntyre’s case, the Rock has said he feels he will be the WWE’s next big star. Owens could help push him to the point McIntyre may challenge Lesner for the Universal title, cause let’s face it, he, Reigns, Strowman, and Lashley are the only ones capable to being a legitimate threat to Lesner. The rest are pretenders to the crown.
On Smackdown, Owens could they feud with Randy Orton, bringing a rattlesnake mentality to face off with the viper. If anyone can put Owens over big time, it’s Orton, so what could be a better pairing? Of course, if Orton wins the WWE heavyweight championship at SummerSlam, it’d add fuel to the fire with Kingston looking to take it back. It could be a pretty fun triple threat match.
How far will Owens rise?
