Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here with Part 2 of tonight’s WWE SmackDown preview. As I type we are an hour and a half away from showtime, and just a few minutes ago they were nice enough to announce a second segment for tonight! And we’ve actually got a match here for this one, a championship match at that! Granted, we only know one half of it… but beggars can’t be choosers~
The New Day will be defending their WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championships in an open challenge!
Kofi Kingston and Big E are looking to be fighting champs and give an opportunity to anyone who’s looking for it. On the surface there are only so many possibilities for this, but we can make this interesting with a little creativity…
The New Day have of course been feuding with The Revival for most of the year. I have to think they wouldn’t be booking this just to go right back to that, but we’ll see.
Oftentimes when they have this scenario, the idea is to have higher level babyfaces give lower level babyfaces a chance to shine alongside them. It’d be fitting for them to give Heavy Machinery a chance, seeing as they’ve been helping the New Day out recently and have been a very popular tandem for some time. If Shorty G and Mustafa Ali want to be a regular team, this too would be a great chance to establish that for them.
On the heel side, any combination of Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura or Cesaro would be interesting. Nakamura clearly has no challengers for his IC title to worry about right now so why not try to become double champion?
As a longshot option… the Usos were drafted to Raw but they never did make an appearance and it’s an easy enough thing to explain away if they ended up moving back to SmackDown. Reportedly, they’ve been waiting in the wings, ready to come back for a while, but the right time just hasn’t come yet. Who’s to say they can’t come back to the blue brand to challenge their long-time rivals again?
