Ladies and gentlemen it is now 2020, New Year’s Day! But more importantly it’s Wednesday, which means WWE NXT and AEW Dynamite tonight! Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here, to give you the previews for everything All Elite as usual~! It’s a special night of course, AEW Homecoming, and they’ve perhaps stacked tonight’s card more than ever before for the occasion! There’s plenty to talk about, so let’s dive into the previews!
There was so much announced for this show that I almost missed a match! Thankfully caught it in time…
Dustin Rhodes will be taking on Sammy Guevara.
Dustin Rhodes is the most experienced member of AEW’s regular roster, a storied veteran. Sammy Guevara is conversely among the many 20-somethings on the roster, the many promising upstarts that the promotion hopes to build around in the future. In addition to being a generational clash, it’s also another in the line of battles between the Elite and the Inner Circle, a war that promises to define AEW’s early years.
Dustin and Sammy have had a number of run-ins, but Dustin’s main focus is on Sammy’s involvement in the attack that broke his hand a couple of months ago. When Jake Hager shattered the hand of Dustin Rhodes, Sammy was there, quite sadistically filming the whole thing on his phone and laughing like a mad man. In a special Road To Jacksonville video, Dustin addressed this occurrence, calling out Sammy for his arrogance and foolishness to do such a thing. He claimed that he was not a God, not a leader but a follower. He threatened to put an end to him, and that the Gods will not want him because he is a reject.
You can see this video, which also includes a promo from Darby Allin on his upcoming match with Cody and a look at the Jericho/Moxley situation, below:
As for this match, Sammy’s absorbed a lot of losses and remained one of the heels with the most heat in the promotion, consistently getting tons of boos in his entrances. So he can probably take another, but Sammy could also use this win a lot more than Dustin could. At this stage of his career, you’d have to go out of your way to harm the guy. I’m thinking Sammy Guevara finally gets a singles win here, likely with help from Dustin’s true nemesis, Jake Hager.
