Former Impact Wrestling World Champion Brian Cage is not going to remain a presence in Impact Wrestling any longer. He was unable to make what would have been one of his final appearances for the company against Rob Van Dam at Impact: Hard To Kill. This was due to a shoulder injury which will put him out for 3 to 5 months. When he reemerges, it won’t be for Impact. He has signed with All Elite Wrestling.
What Does Brian Cage Have To Offer To AEW?
One constant complaint about AEW since their roster was revealed is the lack of big heavyweights. Most of the AEW roster are more average sized and agile wrestlers. The exceptions can be counted on one hand, Luchasaurus, Jake Hagar, Wardlow, and Andy Williams. Brian Cage might wrestle like a Cruiserweight but he is an incredibly big and imposing man.
One of the best combinations of speed and power in wrestling today, he is sure to make a huge impact once he is healthy to debut for the company in a few months time. We will likely see some video packages before his debut, as he’s not a man, he’s a machine.
Another Odd Character For AEW?
When Brian Cage had his name initially in Lucha Underground, he was basically a wrestling cyborg. Half man, half machine. He might bring this character to AEW, who are showing to be no stranger to weird characters. We have an evil cult in The Dark Order, a dinosaur, two librarians, a second evil cult led by Brandi Rhodes, why not have a wrestling cyborg as well?
Cage can really sell everyone on being an unstoppable machine, especially with proper build through hype packages.
Could Another Goofy Character Break The Fans?
Fans are getting a bit annoyed about the amount of offbeat characters in All Elite Wrestling, but there is still balance. If you use too many of them, you risk a very corny show that pushes away hardcore fans. If you focus too much on pure wrestling, you’re just going to bore casual fans and come off to hardcore fans as NJPW Jr. It is all about balance, and they haven’t went too far in either direction yet.
