It’s Friday once again everybody and you know what that means. Another edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown is upon us. Coming off his defeating the Fiend to become WWE Universal Champion, Bill Goldberg appears here tonight on SmackDown! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer, here to give you the same full coverage as always. That means live results and recaps from the show as they come, plus previews of all we can expect. However not much has been announced for tonight, the post-Super Show-Down edition of SD. It seems like they’re just plugging appearances for Goldberg and John Cena and calling it a day. And y’know, I kinda can’t fault that, it’ll probably work just fine.
Bill Goldberg To Appear Tonight On WWE Friday Night SmackDown
So yesterday, Goldberg became the WWE Universal Champion. I’d heard plenty of talk in the lead-up that it was very much a real possibility and even a few spoilers of a sort that plans had changed regarding what the title match at Mania would end up being. And it turned out to be true. After a year of being built as an unstoppable force, the Fiend drops the title to Bill Goldberg a little over a month before WrestleMania.
And thus the string of part-timers headlining WrestleMania is extended to ten consecutive years, with Cena/Miz being the last one that was inarguably a main event between two regulars. And of course even that one was mostly done to promote the Rock/Cena match that would be taking place the year after. It’s really kind of a sad state of affairs, and makes it all too easy to question where WWE will be in a few years. But at the very least, this year I am confident that the part-timers will be putting over the regulars. I sure hope that’s the case anyway.
The Fiend should definitely defeat John Cena if that’s the plan, I certainly hope Drew McIntyre will beat Brock Lesnar and I can’t really imagine Goldberg beating Roman Reigns, as is assumed to be our main event. For now though, Goldberg is our top champion. Tonight is his coronation, after a sort. He’ll likely be confronted by a gaggle of new challengers, all of whom will vie for a shot at the title in the Elimination Chamber. Somebody might get speared and it might be King Corbin…
