The opening match of Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) weekly Super Viernes show, their biggest weekly show saw the Rudo team of Akuma & Espanto Jr defeat Halcon Suriano Jr & Sonic in two consecutive falls.
For those new to the CMLL product, nearly every match outside of the ‘Lighting Match’ 10-minute singles matches take place in the traditional two out of three falls setting. Multi-man matches see a captain appointed, meaning a fall over the captain counts as an automatic win of the current fall. To gain a fall victory in tag (both) and multi-man (the majority) a team must defeat multiple members of the team.
CMLL Super Viernes Opener And Headliner February 28 Analysis
The opening match wasn’t anything to write home about, which is often one of the problems with CMLL programming. However, a viewer could argue that the match wasn’t awful either.
Later in the show after Block A of the Mexican National Tag Team Championship, which is back under control of CMLL — the Rudo team of Felino, Negro Casas, and Terrible defeated Angel de Oro, Diamante Azul, and CMLL World Light Heavyweight Champion Niebla Roja in two falls to one.
New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) fans have seen many of the talents featured in this match during NJPW tours, and they didn’t disappoint here either. Oro and Rojo are two of the best currently on the CMLL roster, Casas is one of the best psychology masters in professional wrestling, Terrible is known for show skills and ability to emote in the ring — their skills allowed the match to come together effectively, getting a quality reaction from those within Arena Mexico.
While not the greatest match, it was effective in breaking up the two tag team tournaments featured on the show. It’s a different style than what NJPW fans will be used to seeing from the luchadores, but their talent did shine through in the time they were given.
