It’s that day again… that’s right, it’s Wednesday night and that means we’ve reached the peak of our wrestling week! Tonight, one of the last big stips awaiting Cody Rhodes ahead of his match with MJF comes to fruition, as he must receive ten lashes from a belt! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer and just as I’ve done for the past half a year on this site, I’ll be here with you all night! Giving you the live recap and results of the show, moments after the segments conclude! Plus, previews of everything that’s been announced for the show! And by far the most significant thing on this episode of AEW Dynamite, atleast from my point of view, is this segment right here…
Cody Rhodes To Receive Ten Lashes From MJF
Tonight’s the night… when MJF listed his three stipulations, the big things Cody would have to agree to in order to get a match with him, this one was by far the most out-there. He had to agree not to touch MJF a single time before the show or the match was off, a not-at-all uncommon stip. Cody had to defeat MJF’s heavy Wardlow in AEW’s first-ever Steel Cage match. A tall task, but certainly not outside the norm in pro wrestling. But he also had to agree to this, which MJF called his personal favorite stipulation… ten lashes from a leather belt to his bare skin on live television.
I’m sure there’s a deeper cut than this, some old school Memphis angle that I don’t know about. But to me, when I heard about this, I immediately thought back to Tommy Dreamer and the Sandman, the night where Dreamer had to take ten shots from his Singapore Cane. That was the stip and Tommy refused to back down from it when given the opportunity, getting up time and again after every brutal lash and begging for more with the famous “Thank you sir, may I have another?” line. It was a night that in many ways solidified Tommy Dreamer’s place in ECW as it’s very beatable, yet undying hero.
Cody is the last person in AEW who needs any help getting over, but I imagine tonight they’ll be shooting for that same emotion.
In every way they can, they’ve tried to hype up just how gruesome this will be. Cody has said that he’s pushed for it to be in the second hour as he wants parents to put their kids to bed before it airs. MJF has claimed at every chance he gets that Cody will never make it through all ten. The goal is to leave Cody’s back a total bloody mess, of that much I’m positive. He will be martyred and crucified live on AEW Dynamite tonight but will keep standing nonetheless.
And this is where the first stip becomes powerful too, because he has to take it all and then keep from fighting back after it’s all said and done. It’s got the makings of a classic angle and that’s what they’re shooting for. Let’s see how it lands.
