One of the hidden stars of All Elite Wrestling is Joey Janela. Having barely appeared on AEW Dynamite, and often being placed on AEW Dark instead, he is often forgotten as part of the AEW roster. He will become more scarce in the company now, as he has returned to a full time schedule on the independent circuit.
Joey Janela Explains This Choice
Joey Janela isn’t pushing himself away from AEW due to direct frustrations, but rather just feels himself slipping skill wise. “My work was really suffering from the lack of dates. I had a certain flow and once you go from wrestling 4-5 times a week to twice a month, your work is gonna suffer no matter what. Your instincts are not gonna be great,” stated Janela during an interview with Wrestling Inc. “This past summer I was wrestling hour matches without issue. Now, I feel like I’m not myself in the ring so we’ve gotta start doing indies again. I’m not a guy who goes to train as that’s not my thing. I don’t like to waist bumps as if I’m going to do bumps, they’re gonna be in front of a crowd.”
His constant work flow on the independent circuit rivals even the biggest touring company, but it is what makes him Joey Janela. It has lead to a very deep body of work, and to him being one of the most flexible people in wrestling style wise.
AEW Could Do Nothing About This
A good chunk of the AEW roster is still working outside of the company, and Janela will still be available when they need him. He will simply be doing what he loves in the meantime. If AEW gave him a steady stream of weekly work instead of occasional matches, he would likely have no issue being full committed to them. He has stated that he doesn’t do the independent matches for the money, it’s for the wrestling. He wants to be the best wrestler he can possibly be, and you can’t knock the guy for wanting to be his best self.
