At AEW Revolution, we would see Jon Moxley end the 178 day reign of Chris Jericho to claim the AEW Championship. This makes him one of the top stars in the wrestling world today, and the undisputed top guy in All Elite Wrestling. Despite this, he is active in more promotions than just AEW, and this victory could impact how he is presented elsewhere.
Keeping The Champion Strong
Wrestling has no more secrets. Back in the day, maybe a wrestler could be a champion in one territory and still lose in another, because information wouldn’t travel that fast. In 2020, everyone is connected. If a champion like Jon Moxley showed up at a small independant show, it would be headline news. If he lost, it would reflect poorly on the enter AEW roster. Simply put, if Jon Moxley is losing to someone not even in the promotion, why is he their champion? It’s a hard issue to solve, especially when Moxley is committed to more companies than just AEW, and is even a champion elsewhere.
Jon Moxley Is The IWGP United States Champion
After reclaiming the title at Wrestle Kingdom 14 from Lance Archer, Moxley is now a two time IWGP United States Champion. He has not been seen with the belt in quite some time, but is due to defend his title soon against Zack Sabre Jr. Many already felt he would not win this match, due to the fact that he is unable to appear in the United States for NJPW due to his AEW contract. His becoming the AEW Champion makes this a surprisingly tense situation.
ZSJ is no slump, and is someone who has beaten some of the best of the best. But the situation remains the same, if he beats Jon Moxley, even if it’s for another title, why is he not in AEW challenging for the AEW Championship? We could see a dirty finish to make up for this, with faction interference being a likely way to do this.
Other Upcoming Matches
While his clash with Zack Sabre Jr is the hardest to work around, he has two other high level matches coming up. One is a match with Over The Top Wrestling Champion David Starr, and the other will be at GCW Bloodsport when Moxley will face Josh Barnett. Neither match has a title on the line, making it obvious Moxley will likely just win.
Do you think Jon Moxley losing outside of AEW would make their company look weak, or is it not a big deal so long as he is kept strong on AEW programming? Let us know what you think about this situation in the comment section down below.
