Savio Vega’s International Wrestling Associaton (IWA PR) had their first big show in 2020 – Histeria Boricua, and already, their alliance is paying off.
As we reported before, IWA PR completed an alliance with Carlos Colon’s World Wrestling Council. The agreement was already creating a buzz on social media. In Humacao, on the far east of the island, such an experiment brought close to 800 fans to the show, Histeria Boricua.
What had happened to IWA PR?
2019 was the year that the IWA PR returned. The company was huge in the early 2000s. It was first a developmental ground for WWF/E talents that needed work outside of Ohio Valley Wrestling. Later on, it turned into the fiercest competition of WWC. Keep in mind that in those times, WWC was promoting already the Colon sons, Carlito, and Primo. Even with such popularity, IWA PR managed to digged a hole into the popularity of the Hall of Famer’s promotion. IWA PR developed new talents like El Mesias, Apolo, and Shane the Glamour Boy.
But, tragedy would strike the IWA PR. Victor Quiñonez, owner and creator of the promotion, suddenly died. With him being the main producer and the one with the big cash, IWA PR fell apart. Savio Vega and Miguel Perez were left off as the owner, which turned everything to worse. In a single year (2006 to 2007), the company was already in financial trouble.
IWA PR would banish in 2011, but their legend was kept on. Fans were asking for its return and with WWL, the new competition of WWC, it seemed that their return was imminent. But, after some failing in the negotiations, Savio Vega and new investors decided to reboot IWA PR without the WWL. IWA PR returned with their old guys, but it seemed more as a nostalgia act than as a promotion. The company was already in the summer facing financial losses.
WWC rescuing IWA PR Histeria Boricua
The year 2020 seemed opaque for IWA PR. But WWC came into the picture. With IWA PR failing, WWC knew that they were desperate to make concessions with old enemies and finally absorb some of IWA’s fans. It became true when Savio Vega appeared in WWC TV.
On Histeria Boricua, Ray Gonzalez, the authority figure of WWC, repaid the favor. He entered the ring with tag team legends, Thunder & Lightning (known collectively as La Familia del Milenio) and answered Savio Vega’s threat. The Humacao building was electric and Savio Vega promised to appear in “WWC Alianza Letal” (which was supposed to happen on Saturday, but now is canceled).
Other names, like Puro Macho – the main heel group of the island and for IWA PR. Plus, Mr. Big and Legio, are big components for fans being interested in the alliance. For now, the alliance will have to wait for the COVID-19, but it seems to be a great business.
