We are but moments away from another episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown and as always you can expect in-depth coverage of the show from the Overtimer! That means live results and recaps, plus previews of everything on tap this evening! Last but not least, we got the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Titles on the line tonight. In a continuation from the odd situation at WrestleMania 36, we got tag gold up for grabs in a three-way singles match! The men who weren’t involved in the ladder spectacle, The Miz, Big E and Jey Uso are the ones going at it this time around.
This rather bizarre situation originally resulted from the Miz and John Morrison barely eeking out a win in an Elimination Chamber match to hold onto the gold after originally taking the belts from the New Day during WWE’s last trip to Saudi Arabia. Ultimately that left the field theoretically wide open going into WrestleMania but the Usos and New Day just can’t stop gravitating towards the titles. So it came down to a match between them with a title shot on the line. Miz and Morrison, idiotic heels who have evidently never watched a single week of WWE programming before, eventually ran in for the double DQ and were subsequently shocked by the immediate ruling to make the title defense a triple threat match – with ladders involved as well!
It didn’t go to plan though, just like so many other things in the last couple of months. When it came time to film the two nights of WrestleMania, the Miz reportedly came in sick and had to be taken off the show. The decision was made to write him off with a claimed injury, blaming the brawl that took place during the go-home SmackDown. And, since this would’ve basically meant a 4-on-1 disadvantage for the heels, they opted to instead go for a singles triple threat – Kofi Kingston, John Morrison and Jimmy Uso. Basically all the fliers. Morrison won when a three-way tug of war resulted in him going toppling from the ladder with the titles in hand!
Now the other halves face off in, technically, a rematch. I really expected the Usos to take the titles in spite of the weird circumstances at Mania. I certainly wouldn’t think it’d happen tonight. The Miz over.
