AEW Dynamite opens up with an announcement of the second half of the TNT Championship Tournament bracket. We will see Kip Sabian facing Dustin Rhodes and Lance Archer going up against Colt Cabana! So a Cody/Archer final now looking very likely. Hikaru Shida will be in action here tonight. Our first match of the night sees Kenny Omega take on Trent! They’re talking up their prior match in New Japan. They got the wrestlers in the crowd to give some ambiance again, separated by a few seats each.
Kenny Omega vs. Trent
Handshake to start with. Lock-up, takes him into the ropes, reversals, Trent starts a chop but stops, pats him on the chest like he’s Okada. Chain wrestling exchange: Lock-up, Go Behind, Headlock Takeover, Headscissor, Kenny gets the advantage with a side headlock. Trent fights his way to his feet, shoots him off but eats a shoulder block. Kenny hits the ropes, Trent stops him with a big double knee to the face! Trent with a snapmare, kick to the back! Kenny with a kick to the gut, stomps to the chest. Gets him into the corner, chop across the chest, whip to the opposite corner, Trent blocks him, double stomp to the chest! Takes Kenny to the outside, Springboard Moonsault! Orange Cassidy and Chuck with a group hug spot, “Best Friends” chant, Kenny surprises them with the Terminator Dive!
Kenny stands and asks for a hug, Orange actually considers it but Chuck pulls him away. Kenny slides into the ring, Kitaro Crusher for a nearfall! Pendulum Backbreaker with a lot of umph. Scoops him up, another backbreaker for a 2 count. Kenny with a chop in the corner, power whip to the opposite side. Pulls Trent up, Trent with a few body shots but Kenny smacks him back to the mat. Irish Whip into a Back Body Drop! Kenny with another power whip into the corner, Trent stumbles forward and stomps the bum hand of Kenny! Gets the wrist into the top rope and works it over, pulling on the hand and fingers! Trent kicks him down into the corner, knees to the face. Knee drop to the singled out arm, forearm to the face. Steps on the hand now! Kneedrop to the forearm, Kenny has to bail.
Trent follows him out, slams the hand on the ring apron. Puts that hand on the apron and stomps on it repeatedly! Lowers the knee pad, tries another knee drop but Kenny avoids it and gets him with a chop, Gigantic German Suplex right onto the floor! Ten minutes gone by, that was kinda quick. Kenny tosses Trent right into the barricade and sends it sliding. And again!
Wants to throw him into a pillar but Trent stops himself, springs off it but Kenny catches him out of the air, powerbombs him right onto the pillar!
Kenny grabs a nearby sign and just tosses it onto Trent! Gets him back into the ring, Fisherman’s Ushigoroshi for a nearfall! Hoists him up, You Can’t Escape, but Trent counters into a Springing Tornado DDT! Trent charges with an elbow strike to the face, traps him on the second rope, knife edge chop to the back, Baseball Slide German Suplex! Brutal! Commercial break. Quite the opening match here.
We come back to see an exchange of forearms! Trent with a knife edge chop! Five minutes remaining here. Trent surprises him with a Half Nelson Suplex! Kenny answers with a V-Trigger! Wants to hoist him up but Trent reverses into a Piledriver for a nearfall! Charging big boot, Kenny avoids it, wants a Snap Dragon but Trent drives him into the corner, Kenny rolls through, Trent wants his Springing Tornado DDT but Kenny blocks it, Snap Dragon nailed! Kenny wants another but Trent is elbowing out of it. They each hit the ropes, Trent turns and nails him with a Lariat, flipping him onto his face! Kenny reverses a Dude Buster attempt with a crunching Powerbomb, V-Trigger!
Kenny pulls himself slowly on the apron, grabs Trent by the hair and gets him to his feet. Wants another Snap Dragon! Trent escapes, knife edge chops laid in. Wants a piledriver, but Kenny gets him into the ring, springs up for a moonsault attempt but Trent catches him, Avalanche German Suplex! Buisaku Knee! Nearfall, very narrow! Trent hoists him up, Kenny fights out, kick to the gut, hits the ropes, running high knee, One Winged Angel! Just as the call for one minute remaining comes in, Kenny gets the win!
Winner: Kenny Omega
I think on some level, Kenny Omega has taken this situation as a challenge to have the best Empty Arena match he possibly can.
