It’s Friday folks. That means another episode of WWE Friday Night SmackDown is on again tonight. As always you can expect in-depth coverage of the show, meaning live results and recaps, plus previews of everything on tap this evening! Moving on now to a significant women’s match, pitting Sasha Banks against Tamina with a future title shot on the line for the latter!
Tamina made a surprise return in the weeks leading up to WrestleMania as one of the several women to challenge the WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Bayley at the big show. While she didn’t win the five-way elimination match, in fact being the first person to drop, it was only due to being ganged up on by all the other competitors. It took Bayley, Naomi, Sasha Banks and Lacey Evans all dogpiling at once to pin her. Up until that point she was presented as unstoppable and has probably been booked stronger than she ever has in the last month or so.
So perhaps it shouldn’t have been too big of a shock when Tamina interrupted Bayley and Sasha’s Post-Mania celebration.
Tamina challenged the champion to a one-on-one match this time around. It was made clear that Bayley’s got a bit of a cowardly heel in her as she obviously didn’t want to face off with Tamina with the title on the line. But after some prodding, she accepted the challenge – IF Tamina can defeat her good buddy Sasha Banks instead. Sasha was none too pleased with this.
This is a part of an overarching story in which a rift has developed between Sasha and Bayley. If it feels like we’ve been here before it’s because we definitely have. Honestly WWE tried for what felt like two years straight to get this storyline going before entirely dropping it entirely a little over a year ago. And now we’re just starting over at this point. But it does feel like it’s much more overt this time around which might lead to an actual conclusion. This match is a pretty key part of the angle since Bayley is essentially feeding Sasha to the unstoppable monster and Tamina will doubtlessly wreck her in this bout. Tamina over. I don’t expect her to be the next champion at all but she’s certainly primed to be the next challenger.
