All Elite Wrestling has had some incredible main events in their short history, but none have been more infamous than Kenny Omega vs. Jon Moxley at AEW Full Gear. It would follow the AEW Championship match between Chris Jericho & Cody Rhodes, as this match was a Lights Out match. This meant no rules, no restrictions, and in storyline it was not sanctioned by AEW. It had no impact on the win/loss records of either men, but it did have an impact on the wallets of AEW.
A 10,000$ Fine For AEW
The match took place in Maryland, and the states athletic commission had some issues with the amount of violence in the match. It’s unclear it it was due to Omega being choked with a chain, the giant bed of Barbed Wire, or the broken glass; but AEW was fined 10,000$ for this match.
This was just a first warning, and if they have another Lights Out match with this level of violence in the state, they could be left unable to run shows there. AEW has not done a match of this type since Moxley vs. Omega, and are likely saving the stipulation for something huge down the line. The MAC has not approved of wrestling in the past, taking offense to blood in matches like Luger vs. Flair at Great American Bash 1988, and intergender wrestling when Vince McMahon & Stephanie McMahon faced off. Vince expected this, and had the cheque already signed to pay off the fine right away.
A Small Price To Pay For Easy Future Hype
The 10,000$ fine is barely a black eye for AEW, but it will likely come in very handy down the line. We will eventually see another match between Moxley & Omega, and this fine could be used to play up the drama of that encounter. If their last match was so violent that it caused the company to get fined, what could happen this time? Even if they just have a standard wrestling match, they will have the fans in the palm of their hand for the build.
Do you think the Moxley vs. Omega match at Full Gear was violent enough to warrant this fine from the Maryland Athletic Commission? Was this fine an over reaction? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
