One of the most iconic teams in the history of Impact Wrestling (then Total Non-Stop Action Wrestling) was the Motor City Machine Guns, Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin. They have had some of the best matches in the companies history, alongside teams like Team 3D (Bubba Ray & Devon Dudley), Beer Money (James Storm & Bobby Roode) and Generation Me (Matt & Nick Jackson). Having stuck with TNA even through the rough times when Hulk Hogan & friends nearly ran the company to the ground seemed to show loyalty, but Shelley now tells a different story on why he stayed.
Alex Shelley Is Honest Like Always On Twitter
While you always have to wonder if a wrestler is pulling the wool over your eyes on Twitter, Alex Shelley is an exception to this rule. He would retweet a clip of the match MCMG had with British Invasion from Final Resolution 2009, adding the following. “This was shortly before Eric Bischoff came in (who was admittedly rad) and the day before The Bucks tryout match: they were signed on the spot. Neither us nor them were on the next month’s PPV. Had to make room for The Nasty Boys vs The Dudleys.”
That last comment showed frustration, prompting fans to wonder why he had stayed so long. He would come back with a very informative response about this.
His Job With TNA Paid For His College
“This is actually an awesome question. I stayed with TNA from 2010-2012 because I was in college and paying my way through. It was income and I never took a student loan out. Also, additionally, Okada was one of my best friends and I wanted to make sure he was safe and sane.”
Alex Shelley is both a free agent in professional wrestling, as well as a licensed physiotherapist, careers he does side by side, much like how Britt Baker is both a wrestler & dentist. We have all lasted out a job we weren’t exactly thrilled about. Shelley still gave his all in every single match, despite potentially being unhappy behind the scenes. Him also being able to help out the then Young Lion Okada during his rough time stateside is also a great showcase of the type of person Shelley is. It also shines a light on what the state of TNA was at the time, with Shelley feeling he had to stick around in part to help Okada out. Okada would infamously be used horrible, which ended the partnership between TNA & NJPW.
