Epico Colon: Without Passion In WWE And The New Image Of WWC

Epico Colon is a particular case in the Columbus Dynasty. He was educated in Western Michigan and from a father whose life did not revolve around Lucha Libre; his path was steeper than that of their dynasty counterparts.

Yesterday, the former tag team champion met with Lucha Libre Online to discuss his future and what his career with WWE was like. It should be noted that the interview was much more bearable than the one they had a few days ago with Primo Colón. The latter wants to push his wobbly tough character. Even when it was not necessary for the interview with Hugo Savinovich. However, with Epico, the story was different. A real aspect of Epico’s life was illuminated.

The first thing that leaped above the audience was Epico Colon’s disappointment with WWE. He indicated that, for the past four years, he had lost the flame of wrestling in the largest company in the world. Orlando added that when he started, everything was new, that winning championships and wrestling in Raw filled him with emotion. But, as time went by, he became disillusioned with the company. Something that Hugo and Michael did not deepen and that, would have been interesting, was when Epico Colon indicated that he provided ideas to creatives; the ideas that he and his cousin seemed to pass on were then transferred to other talents. It would have been interesting to know: What ideas? What talent benefited?

Anyway, it’s telling how a talent with so many years in the company ended with the same effect as many veterans who have been in the company for years: without passion and disappointed.

Another important topic in the interview was the New Image of WWC. As we have reported, prior to the arrival of the Colón cousins, WWC suffered from what I have called “The Great Depression of WWC”, which begins in 2017 (spring) until August 2019. Those two years WWC saw a reduction in their fan base to just 100 fans, with independent companies like a CWA, having a better average than them. Between canceled shows and a route of horrible Universal champions (Thunder, Ray González, Ursus, and Xavant), the WWC was at their worst moment in its history.

Epicotells in the interview that Eddie “Primo” Colón told him about starting to do something for the company in Aniversario (2019), which for him(Epico), it was refreshing. They immediately changed the image of the ring, the logo, the lights; renewing the decrepit perception that fans had of the regular image of the company. Second, the Universal Championship fell into the hands of Epico. For him, the championship must be out of the important stories.

What made Epicotake this model of business? Nothing more and nothing less than New Japan Pro Wrestling and its historic IWGP Heavyweight Championship. For Orlando, defending the championship with high caliber talents such as his cousin, Mecha Wolf 450 and Texano Jr. will bring glory to that championship again. There is no doubt that Epico Colon has been aware of what makes such a company like WWC successful; whose few remaining gems are its national television, history, and its historic championship. In fact, one could say that even the switch to the classic version of the Universal Championship has helped provide a better perception of the title.

The future of Epico Colon so far seems to be with WWC. But, as Hugo and Konnan have insisted, AAA could be in the sights for the former WWE partner. In addition to that probability, Orlando indicated that upon returning from quarantine, they could be bringing a mega show to WWC. This one even made a distinction that it was not necessarily going to be an Anniversary, which leads me to think that some specific international talent or particular stipulation will be a central part of the promotion of the said event. So far, Epico and Primo have managed to lift WWC back to the pinnacle of Puerto Rican wrestling and it could continue to increase if they had that mindset demonstrated in the interview.
