WWE Friday Night SmackDown is soon at hand. After weeks of anticipation, tonight Jeff Hardy makes his return to SmackDown for the first time since Mid-March. Here at the Overtimer, as always you can expect an in-depth coverage of the show. That means live results from the show as they come, plus links to detailed recaps of each segment, and of course a preview of everything we can expect to see here this evening. There is way more announced in advance for this show than usual so let’s get to it!
Jeff Hardy Returns To The Ring Tonight
Heh, yeah. This is a little funny to me. I was contemplating putting “returns” in snide quotation marks but technically it’s not wrong, just a touch misleading. It’s been two months since we’ve seen Jeff live on SmackDown and we’d call that a return in most cases. He came back after nearly a year on the shelf to defeat King Corbin, only to immediately disappear again because they had no plans for him at WrestleMania.
Before that, the last time we saw him was when he and his brother Matt Hardy had to relinquish the SmackDown Tag Team titles, only for Jeff to be written off by a violent assault from Lars Sullivan. Every single thing about that sentence exemplifies how long ago this was. Jeff’s run in WWE since coming back in 2017 has been a spotty one in general. It’s had some bright spots, most notably his wild Hell In A Cell match with Randy Orton at the 2018 version of the titular event. But largely it’s been defined by injuries and legal issues, and he’s spent more time away from the ring than he has inside it.
As is perpetually the case with Jeff though, everyone wants to see him bounce back and everyone wants to give him an infinite amount of chances. I’d knock it but I can’t act like I’m not the same, I do hope he rebounds strong here. He’ll be making his return tonight and will almost definitely have a confrontation with Sheamus, who has made it clear that he despises hearing all this buzz about Jeff even when he’s the one who’s been running roughshod over everyone that’s been put in his way since his own return from injury months ago. Sheamus let it be known that he’d be in the building the night Jeff came back.
