There are few names more legendary in professional wrestling than The Undertaker. A character like his should not have had the longevity that it has had, being a zombie wizard who once became a motorcycling enthausist before going back to his roots. He is the prime example of how a supernatural character can work perfect in this industry. Most of this is due how great the man behind the character is, and we shouldn’t expect him to be finished with wrestling anytime soon.
Undertaker Will Never Leave The Wrestling Industry
During an interview with Slam Sports, The Undertaker would speak on what people felt was impending, his retirement. “I’ll never, ever retire completely. I may not get in the ring and wrestle anymore, but I’ll always somehow be involved I’m sure within the industry. For 30 years, I’ve been a mainstay in the ring.”
He recently signed a 15 year contract with WWE, essentially giving him a job for the rest of his life. It could have been a legends contract, with him not intending to get back in the ring unless it’s a particularly juicy match. Most of his current appeal lies in his character work and legacy, with those alone more than enough to make him of great important to WWE. He will remain a draw for the company, and if his matches are to be more spread out than ever, they will only feel more and more important.
The Boneyard Match Formula Doesn’t Require Him Getting Back In The Ring
At Wrestlemania 36, one of the most memorable matches in WWE history took place as AJ Styles faced The Undertaker in what was dubbed ‘a Boneyard Match’. It was a cinematic variant of the traditional Buried Alive match, and had Undertaker looking his absolute best. The ability to reshoot scenes on the fly was perfect for someone like The Undertaker who has been out of his prime for years. There are plenty of potential scenerios that would work perfectly for Undertaker, and it even opens up the chance to have the dream match with Sting that everyone has been wanting.
