Billed as a WrestleMania rematch, Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins will face off on WWE Raw. Last week, Owens stepped in as Rey Mysterio’s partner in a tag team match against Rollins and Murphy. The winner of the match would be able to name the stipulation for Mysterio and Rollins’ match at Extreme Rules.
Mysterio and Owens won, and Mysterio’s stipulation is an Eye for an Eye match. The WWE announced last week that to win one must pull their opponent’s eye out of their face. Ignoring the obvious question of how are they going to pull this off (cinema match?), Owens looks surprised and disturbed at Mysterio’s announcement last week.
Could Owens join Rollins?
This match feels unnecessary except to fill time and possibly recruit Kevin Owens into the Monday Night Messiah’s disciples. It’d make sense for Owens to switch teams as he could view Mysterio as the real bad guy in this one as he’s blinded by vengeance.
It’s also worth noting that Dominic Mysterio showed he’s just as bloodthirsty when he went after Murphy’s eyes last week, so Owens could be fighting an uphill battle over this. We’ll probably see a segment or two with him backstage trying to talk them out of it or taking to someone else about how the stipulation bothers him.
It wouldn’t be the first time allies turned on each other over a difference of punishment.
But this doesn’t feel like the Owens we’ve come to know since his face turn against Shane McMahon months ago. In fact, it flies in the face of his current character, but could he be horrified enough at Mysterio’s stipulation to turn heel to prevent it? The enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?
On the contrary, we believe Owens will try to do everything he can to injure Rollins so he can’t take part in the match and Save Mysterio from doing something so heinous.
This will lead to him taking some chances and making some mistakes, and while Owens may win, setting Rollins reeling, he won’t succeed in what he hopes to accomplish by taking the Monday Night Messiah out. One thing we feel safe in saying is this won’t be on the same level as Rollins and Owens’ WrestleMania match thrill-wise, meaning no one will jump off the stage area or something like that, but WWE Raw could have a better match overall if they’re allowed to perform and give us a solid effort. Time will tell, but this should be interesting to see how it plays our as it’s the promotion’s best storyline currently going. Who knows, maybe they’ll surprise us.
