Keith Lee was the man to end the record setting NXT Championship reign of Adam Cole, and truly deserves the title of ‘Limitless’. However his reign might not be limitless, as he will face the force of nature that is Karrion Kross, who is undefeated, and has beaten men like Tomassao Ciampa in mere minutes. Add in that Kross blinded Lee with a flashpaper produced fireball in the contract, and things do not look good for Keith Lee.
Very few men have beaten Keith Lee since he got going in NXT, but tonight might be the hardest test yet for him. We’ve never seen Kross be taken to the limit, but he’s been in danger in the past. Can Lee successfully defend his NXT Championship, or is the end here? Will we Fall and Pray, or Bask In Glory?
A Big Match Feel For This Main Event
As Lee stood in the ring with Kross, there was an electric feeling in the air, that of a big main event. They would lock eyes, and stare holes through each other. As the bell rang Keith Lee effortlessly dropped Kross with a shoulder tackle, and they’d get right into second gear.
Lee would throw some haymakers at Kross, pummeling him in the corner, then hitting a big crossbody, sending Lee fleeing to the outside. Kross would be pursued, and he’d gain control on the outside brawl. He’d miss a punch and hit plexiglass, and Lee would break a section of the glass with ease, then be attacked and the arm of Lee would be stuck between the glass and barricade briefly.
Giving Kross a target is dangerous, but that is what happened here. The left arm would be the target, and Lee would be trapped in an armlock, his elbow hyperextended. This hold would be broken, but the damage was done, and he’d be sent hard to the mat. We’ve rarely seen Lee this vulnerable.
Karrion Kross Is Ruthless In His Assault
Lee would fight back to his feet, but be sent shoulder first into the corner twice and then into the steel post. Kross would finally go for a pinfall, getting a two count before moving to an armlock again. Lee wouldn’t give up, and would rally back to his feet, but Kross would send a big elbow his way before he’d hit an armbreaker, sending Lee into the mat again.
This is a new side of Karrion Kross, ruthless like usual, but calculated at the same time. He’s picking a limb apart, but Lee is dangerous with one good arm. Lee would get back to his feet, but Kross countered a lariat attempt into a cross armbreaker, with Lee grasping his hands to prevent the full extension, rolling it over to a pinfall. The hold wouldn’t be fully broken, as Kross applied the triangle, but Lee lifted him and slammed him down with one good arm.
Lee would find some power in his left arm, and rock Kross with some big strikes and hitting a huge powerslam as this match shifted to his favor.
Never Count Keith Lee Out Until The End
The Spirit Bomb would be attempted but Kross slipped out and hit a hard elbow. A big DDT would drop Lee on his head, but only get a near fall. Kross would try for the Doomsday Saito, and Lee would fight out to hit a vertical suplex for a near fall. Both men were fatigued, and Lee would be dropped with a big clothesline.
They’d exchange blows in the middle of the ring, with Kross getting the better of it, Lee taking a knee. Kross hit the ropes, but Lee came back hard with a clothesline of his own. Lee would go for Grizzly Magnum, Kross dodged and hit the Doomsday Saito, not enough to end this one. The Kross Jacket would be applied in the middle of the ring, and Lee would start to fade. Lee would respond just in time to stay in this match, rallying back to escape this hold and get back to his feet.
Lee would hit a headbutt, and nail the Spirit Bomb in the middle of the ring, Kross kicking out at two. He’d drag Kross to the corner to try for something off the ropes, and they’d battle on the top rope where Kross hit a Doomsday Saito off the middle rope and win the match.
This match started off fast, but went far too long with the final stretch being very slow. After such a fast paced show, a slow main event didn’t hit the spot. If you like big heavyweight matches, you’ll like this match. I give this one ⅗ (***). Keith Lee’s title reign ends earlier than anyone would have liked, and Karrion Kross is in control of the top prize in NXT.
