After getting punted not once or twice but three times by Randy Orton on last week’s WWE Raw, we’re going to get an update on Drew McIntyre’s storyline injury.
As they reported last week, he may have suffered a fractured skull and was bleeding into his brain, and he was taken to the hospital for further testing.
But on Payback’s Kickoff Show, Charly Caruso stated he suffered a hairline fracture of his jaw.
And tonight we’ll receive our first official update on his condition from the man himself, or at least someone speaking for him.
McIntyre and Orton at Clash of Champions
Despite often letting it slide for various wrestlers in recent memory, like Brock Lesnar and Andrade, the WWE has a rule that states a champion must defend their title once every thirty days.
Given the storyline they’re currently running where McIntyre may have suffered a severe injury at Orton’s hands, it opens up a world of possibilities for what’s to come for the champion.
Though the injury technically wouldn’t keep him from wrestling, there’s the possibility they’ll use it to further hype a potential match with Randy Orton at Clash of Champions.
If that’s the case, then there’s no problem with him keeping the WWE Championship and defending it.
The fact that Orton’s push has been damaged after loosing to Keith Lee in what Orton will claim to be a lucky win, by Lee.
But since the match went less than five minutes, it more or less says to fans that Orton’s not a real threat to McIntyre.
It also brings up the question to how viable a champion McIntyre is after his previous struggle with Orton, and that’s damaging to both McIntyre and Lee being friends.
This is most likely sowing the seeds for Lee and McIntyre to face off at Survivor Series or Hell in a Cell, depending on whether they have Orton defeat him at Clash of Champions or not.
Vacate the championship
This is one of the predominant theories out there that’s based more on the fractured skull injury angle than anything.
There’s little doubt McIntyre will wrestle if he has a broken jaw, but what if Orton gets to him again?
It’s a safe bet Orton will try and probably fail due to Keith Lee, which also makes McIntyre look weak and would lead to their future clash.
But assuming Orton does land another punt kick or even an RKO, it’ll be hard for WWE Creative to ignore the potential storyline of further injury problems, in which case McIntyre will have to vacate.
If he vacates the championship due to a further “injury,” then it’ll open up the door for a tournament like in WrestleMania 4.
It’ll give plenty of others a chance to be pushed before Orton or another steady guard wins it for another storyline.
Tonight’s WWE Raw looks like it’ll be a good one, so what do you think will happen? Let us know in the comments below.
