The headline match of G1 Climax 30 Night 3 saw two CHAOS members go to battle against one another. Former two-time Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro) Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion and former five-time NEVER Openweight Champion Tomohiro Ishii faced current RevPro Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion and former NEVER Openweight Champion Will Ospreay.
Ospreay was the fresher of the two, having only wrestled three times since the COVID-19 (Coronavirus, 2019) forced delay for New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) coming into the match.
G1 Climax 30: Ospreay v Ishii
Despite this being the first time the unit mates wrestled against one another in singles competition, the feeling out process was non-existent. Despite the two having diametrically different wrestling styles, they both are famous for their full speed ahead approach to wrestling.
Ishii needed to get on track after his G1 Climax Night 1 defeat to current NEVER Openweight Champion and Suzuki-Gun leader, Minoru Suzuki. Ospreay was able to best Bullet Club member Yujiro in a competitive match in his night one match.
Despite being at a massive speed and quickness disadvantage against Ospreay, Ishii was able to stay on his front foot during the vast majority of the match. Ospreay was able to deal with the brute force brawling attack of Ishii well due to his increased muscle mass.
In what was a back and forth and competitive match, Ospreay was able to defeat his unit mate with the Stormbreaker technique at the 18 minute and 20-second mark.
The victory left Ishii in a 0-2 hole while Ospreay began G1 Climax 30 with an impressive 2-0 mark. Both have a history of being strong tournament wrestlers; therefore, it’s fair to expect both will have strong performances throughout G1 Climax 30.
While Ospreay wasn’t necessarily a favorite coming into the tournament, he has the chance to turn a few heads and move closer to the top of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s (NJPW) heavyweight division.
