For a few weeks now, Jake Atlas has been a thorn in the side of NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar. He’s taken out both Joaquin Wilde & Raul Mendoza with a steel pipe, and now can redeem his loss from Halloween Havoc. This is the first title shot Atlas has gotten in WWE since making his debut, will he put it to good use? We’ve already had one shocking title change, could we see another?
Jake Atlas With A Hot Start
Atlas would be over-eager in the opening moments, with Escobar getting an early edge. That changed with a quick dropkick from Atlas, a move which sent Escobar to the outside. He’d get back in first after Atlas made chase, and regained control with an enziguri.
Atlas didn’t show any fear as he was beat to the mat with strikes and locked into a submission. He wasn’t looking too strong without his steel pipe. Escobar would let him up for some more hard strikes, and Atlas tried to break free and hit a headscissors, being sent face first into the mat instead.
Atlas would finally get off the mat after some more strikes and have a big comeback rush. He’d rock Escobar with some strikes, but Mendoza came after him at ringside with that steel pipe. Atlas would dodge their attempts and take them both out. He’d hit Escobar with a springboard neckbreaker, getting a two before Escobar fled to the outside. We’d cut to a commercial break.
No Easy Nights For Santos Escobar
Coming back, Wilde & Mendoza were kicked out for tripping Atlas up, so Escobar is alone now. This would suit him fine, he’s stronger with them but still a great champion. He’d stay calm and remain in control of Atlas, and hit a top rope hurricanrana, sending Atlas hard to the middle of the ring. Escobar went up high and nailed a picture perfect frog splash for a two count.
Atlas came off the ropes with a running hurricanrana, then a running dropkick and a quick german suplex. A roundhouse kick would finally drop Escobar, but he’d kick out at two. Atlas got fancy with an armdrag attempt and was shoved off the top rope, onto the announce desk. Escobar would set up the Arrows from the Depths Of Hell but instead just slide to the outside.
Atlas threw a heavy forearm before being thrown into the steel steps. He’d just break the ten count, and drop Escobar over the top rope, and send the champion to the outside. Atlas flailed through the air and barely caught Escobar with the dive. They’d get into the ring and get back to action, Atlas getting two near falls off two roll ups. Escobar set up the driver, Atlas slipped out only to be kicked in the face.
Atlas would hit a rolling fireman’s carry before a standing shooting star press, but again, Escobar doesn’t quit. The Rainbow DDT was next, but it was countered into the Legado Facebuster, and Escobar retained.
