There was an excellent heavyweight contest on Saturday evening, as Anthony Joshua successfully defended the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titles against Kubrat Pulev. It was an occasion that fight fans around the world have been waiting for, with 1,000 fans back in attendance for the huge event at The SSE Arena.

It was a dominant performance from Joshua from the opening bell, as he knocked down the Bulgarian on three occasions before delivering a brutal finish in the ninth round. The contest looked to be all but over after Pulev was dropped for the second time in the ninth round, and Joshua professionally got the job done after the Bulgarian wished to continue with a powerful right hand.

Boxing News: Strange Performance In Parts

It wasn’t as comfortable as many would have predicted, as Joshua’s win wasn’t without some hiccups. Pulev won two of the early rounds, which raised doubts whether the fight could be getting away from Joshua. However, he was able to recompose himself after the two rounds to get his punching back on track, and from that point, the result never looked to be in doubt.

Of course, much of the talk in the build up wasn’t even about the Pulev fight, with experts keen to get the latest news on the major unification bout between Joshua and Tyson Fury. The Brit revealed before the fight that he wasn’t thinking about anything other than the mandatory challenger.

Boxing News: Joshua-Fury Set For 2021

There really is only fight that fans want to see in the heavyweight division, and that is the mega unification contest between Joshua and Fury. There is no shortage of talking points centring around that fight, and it could potentially be the biggest boxing event in the past 20 years. Fury wasted no time in calling out Joshua after the fight while wearing a Christmas jumper, and claimed that the fight is definitely going to happen in 2021.

Joshua was more coy when speaking after the victory, as he claimed that his interest is just in holding all of the heavyweight titles. He didn’t call out Fury, but admitted that he would be willing to fight his fellow Brit if he is the fighter that is holding the other title. Eddie Hearn will continue to hold talks with Fury’s camp, and an official announcement could be made in the New Year.
