There is a massive weekend of heavyweight action for fans to look forward to this weekend, as Anthony Joshua defends his WBO, IBF and WBA world titles against Kubrat Pulev. Many are already writing off the Bulgarian heavyweight for the huge fight, but could there be a twist to the tail this weekend?
Pulev certainly comes into the fight in excellent condition, and there are still question marks surrounding whether Joshua has completely recovered from his massive defeat against Andy Ruiz Jr. Could there be another shock this weekend?
Boxing News: Pulev Poses Real Threat
When Ruiz Jr beat Joshua less than two years ago, there wasn’t a single boxing expert that gave the Mexican a chance. The same can’t be said this weekend, as Pulev is a real credible threat for the heavyweight title. Unlike Ruiz, Pulev has dominated throughout his career, and fighters that have shared the ring with him have spoken highly about how talented the Bulgarian is. One of those was Hughie Fury, who revealed this week that he believes that there could be a difficult night in store of the British champion.
Pulev beat Fury by unanimous decision back in October 2018, which earned him a mandatory spot for the Joshua titles. Of course, Ruiz’s shock win and the coronavirus pandemic have meant that the date for their bout has been needed to be pushed back, but that has given Pulev more time to prepare for this fight as well as Joshua.
Boxing News: Pulev’s Dominant Record
Pulev is no stranger to the big occasion, and has already fought in a world title fight on one previous occasion. That night may not have gone as planned for the Bulgarian as he was knocked out in the fifth round against Wladimir Klitschko, but there would have been lessons that would have been learnt on that fateful night in Hamburg.
Since that defeat, Pulev has improved in the ring, and has knocked out two of the eight opponents that he has come up against. It’s also not worth forgetting that he has beaten high class opposition during this time, with wins of Derek Chisora, Rydell Booker and Kevin Johnson as well as Hughie Fury. This will be a massive night for the Bulgarian, as it will be his last chance to be a world champion. But, fans would not be wise to write off his chances.
