On November 25th New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) presented Best of the Super Juniors (BOSJ 27) from the Tokki Messe in Niigata, Japan in front of 887 fans. COVID-19 (Coronavirus, 2019) safety restrictions were responsible for the reduced crowd size, but the crowd was noticeable throughout the event.
The marquee series match of the event saw Suzuki-Gun member El Desperado take on CHAOS member “High Voltage” Sho in a match El Desperado needed to win to keep his BOSJ 27 Finals hopes alive.
El Desperado came into the match after a loss against “Way to the Grand Master” Master Wato on November 23rd, while Sho came into the match after a victory against former two-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion and BOSJ 19 (2012) winner “Funky Weapon” Ryusuke Taguchi.
At times the contest was highly technical and highly physical at others, with the competitors renewing their rivalry from the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team division where Desperado teams with Suzuki-Gun member “Heel Master” Yoshinobu Kanemaru and Sho teams with “High & Mighty” Yoh as Roppongi 3k.
Despite both attempting to get the submission victory, neither were able to do so, leading to El Desperado to eventually gain the fall at the 18 minutes and 40 seconds mark with his Pinche Loco technique. The victory moved his BOSJ 27 record to (3-2) [6 points] while Sho’s dropped to (3-2) [6 points].
Sho’s drops him into the middle of the BOSJ 27 series table, away from a first-place tie and a finals spot. Yet, still with hope to advance that far if his form returns.
The victory for El Desperado put him in an interesting place, especially with a victory over former three-time IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion, BOSJ 25 (2018) winner, and Los Ingobernables de Japon (LIJ) member “Time Bomb” Hiromu Takahashi earlier in the tournament. If Desperado wins out, he’s guaranteed a final opportunity.
Sho faced “Way to the Grand Master” Master Wato on November 29th, while El Desperado faced fellow Suzuki-Gun member Douki on the same night.
